"Are you okay?" Reyna asked, squinting at Nico. "You're smiling a lot."
Nico wrinkled his nose at her. "God forbid I'm happy."
Reyna scowled. She stood up from the sofa, going to grab a drink from the kitchen. When she got back, carrying two massive mugs of hot chocolate, she set them on the coffee table and grabbed the TV remote.
"Movie night," she announced. "Put the phone away."
Nico did, still with a smile and a light blush. Reyna eyed him but didn't push. Nico would tell her what was going on eventually.
-
Reyna recognised Nico's flirting voice the moment she passed his room.
She was about to knock and let him know it was time to head out to meet Hazel but the doors in their apartment were thin and Nico's flirting voice was loud.
She knew she shouldn't listen. It was rude and an invasion of privacy and it was so... tempting.
Reyna leaned in closer to the door - not pressing her ear to it because she wasn't eavesdropping.
Don't look at her like that. She wasn't.
"I can't wait," Nico said. "I miss you."
Reyna could picture him kicking his feet like a giddy schoolboy. Okay, as his honourary sister, she had to stop.
"Nico," she said firmly, rapping the door three times. "It's time to go."
She caught a hurried 'bye, amore' before she managed to dart out of earshot.
-
It started with Nico's excuses. He would say he was going for a walk and then be gone for three hours.
It wasn't that Reyna minded. She really didn't. Nico was entitled to his privacy.
It was just... he was her brother. She wanted him to feel safe around her. When Nico came out to her, she thought he finally trusted her.
Now, apparently he had a boyfriend and he wasn't even going to mention it.
"How was your walk?" she asked miserably from the kitchen table as Nico walked in.
Flushed (and not from the cold, Nico shrugged.
"It was good," he said, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl.
"Must have been." Reyna tried to bite her tongue but couldn't. "You were gone for hours."
Nico tightened his grip on his apple and nodded.
"Yeah."
He scurried away like a mouse.
Reyna huffed. Fine.
-
It was not fine. The walks were bad. The late nights at work were bad. The random sleepovers with Percy were killing her.
Percy, of all people! He was Nico's friend but he was also a dick to him in high school!
When Reyna met him, Nico was an isolated freshman with low self esteem and no idea how to do his eyeliner. She'd known him for seven years.
And she liked to think she knew him better than Percy.
It wasn't like Nico was actually staying with Percy but Percy obviously knew where he was going! Both of them were terrible liars. They couldn't keep eye contact with her for one second.
-
It got worse, somehow, when Reyna started noticing the differences.
It was small things like an extra mug that needed washing and a blanket not folded to perfection like Nico liked it. There was a sappy romcom in the Netflix 'continue watching' and two McDonald's happy meal boxes in the trash.
