I was on a private jet with Federico and Jax. My godfather was busy on his phone when a flight attendant approached me.
"Would you like something to drink, miss?" she asked with a kind smile.
"Water," I replied before glancing down at Jax. "And something for my little guy too."
She nodded and returned moments later with a glass of water for me and a small bowl of water for Jax. I thanked her, taking a long sip of water while Jax eagerly lapped up his share.
"So, Betty, there's something I need to tell you," Federico began, his tone making me look up at him curiously.
"Yeah?" I said, raising my eyebrows.
"We'll be staying at one of my penthouses, but... I need to mention something important." His words made my stomach twist in worry.
"About what?" I asked cautiously.
"One of my business partners has two kids—Blake and Hazel. They're around your age, and they'll be staying with us for now because of the situation with the Kellers," he explained.
"The Kellers? Who are they?" I asked, feeling a growing unease.
"Dangerous people you should avoid at all costs. So, listen to me carefully: stay close to me or inside the house. Blake and Hazel will keep you company if I have to step out. Understand?" His voice was firm, and I nodded.
This Blake and Hazel situation was already unsettling. But if Federico trusted them, I'd try to stay optimistic.
"Your father was good friends with their dad, you know," he added.
"Really? How did they meet?" I asked, intrigued.
"They were classmates back in the day, and after school, they started a business together. I promise, you'll all get along," Federico reassured me.
When we landed, a sleek black car was waiting for us. It was already dark as I held Jax close, the cool night air brushing against my skin.
The car ride to the penthouse was filled with stories about my dad. I learned things I'd never heard before—like how he was the worst student in school but commanded everyone's respect.
"He used to protect kids at school—for a price. He made money by ensuring no one dared mess with them," Federico revealed, chuckling.
I couldn't believe my dad had been that bold. My brothers must have inherited his determination, though Federico said Dad made sure to raise them to be fair and just.
"Your mom changed him. She made him into the man he became," Federico said, his voice softening.
"They really loved each other, huh?" I asked with a small smile.
"Deeply. They were head over heels in love, Betty. The kind of love everyone dreams of," he said, making my chest tighten with bittersweet emotions.
I thought of my brothers, missing them more than ever. I quickly sent Vincenzo a message:
Hi. We're on our way to his penthouse. We're okay. I love you all, please tell that to our brothers. I'll call you later. Bye. I miss you.
When Vincenzo replied, it was like hearing his voice:
Hey, sweetheart. I'm glad you're okay. We miss you too, and the brothers yelled that they love you. Call me when you can.
The underground garage of the penthouse was pristine. As we stepped into the elevator, Federico explained, "The elevator only works with the right card."
"What if I need to leave, but you're not here with the card?" I asked.
"You're not leaving alone, Betty. Your brothers would kill me if I let that happen," he said, laughing as he hugged me.
When the elevator opened, I gasped. The penthouse was massive—modern and luxurious, with sleek furnishings. Jax darted off to explore.
Before I could take it all in, I heard a girl's voice echoing through the space.
"Federico, tell that stupid Blake to stop being an asshole!"
A second later, a pretty girl with brown hair and matching eyes appeared. She was in black sweatpants and a white sweater, her face lighting up when she saw me.
"You must be Lissy!" she exclaimed, pulling me into a hug.
"You must be Hazel," I said, smiling as she nodded enthusiastically.
"Blake!" she yelled. "Stop shouting and don't be an asshole to your sister!"
Blake's voice boomed from another room. "I didn't do anything! She stole my—" He cut off as he walked in, his sharp jawline and dark hair catching my attention.
"Okay, kids. I'll be in my office if you need anything," Federico said, kissing my forehead before disappearing.
Hazel smirked and grabbed my arm. "Come on, Lissy. Let's watch a movie. Forget about him," she said, glaring at her brother.
"Anymore?" I asked, confused.
"Oh, yeah. You two used to be inseparable as toddlers. Our parents said you had a 'crush' on each other. I even saw the photos," she teased.
Blushing, I followed her to the couch.
"What do you want to watch?" she asked.
"Anything but slashers," I admitted with a shudder.
"Thank God. I hate them too. But that idiot loves them," she said, gesturing at Blake, who was making his way toward us.
"Someone has to," he said casually, sitting on the other end of the couch.
"Why?" Hazel shot back, crossing her arms.
"So when a maniac comes for us, I'll know how to save you both," he said smugly.
Hazel rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure."
This was going to be interesting...
