It was already late in the evening when I was playing with little Jax, watching him chew his toy. It was so funny to see him get lost in it. I wanted to give him some treats, but I had run out of them in my room. So, I left Jax in his puppy playpen and stepped out of my room.
As I walked through the hallway, I stopped when I saw Matteo coming out of his room.
"Matteo..." I called softly, but he just brushed past me, ignoring me as though I wasn't even there.
"You don't want to talk to me, I get it," I said, frustration building up. "You're mad, mad at me for all the stupid things I've done. I already understand that. But why do you have to punish me for it too? I've already punished myself." I muttered under my breath as he continued walking down the stairs.
Not once did he look back, not even a glance. It hurt to see him ignore me like this. I could never do that to someone I loved, not for more than a week at least.
So, does that mean he doesn't really love me?
"Why do you hate me so much?" I shouted, anger rising. "It didn't even concern you! I didn't do anything to you, for fuck's sake, Matteo!"
I hated how he was treating me. I hated it with all my heart.
He was already downstairs, heading into the kitchen. Why was he doing this to me?
Enzo suddenly spoke from behind me, his voice sharp. "If you think it didn't concern him, you're so stupid, Lis."
I turned to face him, feeling the heat of his words. "But how does it concern him? I put myself in danger, not him. I wasn't asking for his help."
"You're stupid, Lis," Enzo said, exasperated. "He was worried, just like all of us. The thought that something might have happened to you, the feeling of you being in danger... never mind, you wouldn't understand."
His words hit me harder than I expected. Did it really matter that much to them? Were they all really so worried about me, or was it just about maintaining the tough 'Romano' image?
I walked downstairs into the kitchen, where Jax's treats were stored. Matteo and Enzo were both there.
"I didn't do anything to you!" I couldn't hold back. "If you were so worried about me, why didn't you just say something? It's ridiculous. You're acting like I hurt you so badly. Don't you remember how you treated me when I first came here? You only started acting normal towards me when you saw my bruises, when you heard about my past. You know what? Fine. If you don't want to talk to me, that's okay. Let's just ignore each other until I turn eighteen. Then I'll leave, and I'll never come back."
I grabbed the package of Jax's treats and turned to walk away.
The looks they gave me were unreadable. Matteo even briefly glanced at me. Enzo's jaw dropped, his eyes wide with disbelief.
I walked upstairs and slammed my bedroom door shut behind me. I sat next to Jax, who was looking at me with wide eyes, waiting for his treats. I gave him some, but the pain in my chest didn't fade.
Later that night, I woke up in the middle of the night. Jax was peacefully sleeping in his playpen. I was thirsty, so I decided to grab a bottle of water. As I passed by Vincenzo's office, I heard yelling.
