"Business," Vincenzo said curtly.

I narrowed my eyes, leaning forward slightly. "Yes, I understand...but what kind of business exactly?"

He locked eyes with me, his gaze sharp but calculated. "Nothing important...just boring stuff," he replied, clearly eager to end the conversation.

I wanted to press further, but I stopped myself. The tension in his tone made it clear: whatever he was hiding, he didn't trust me enough to share it.

"You can go back to what you were doing," Vincenzo said firmly, dismissing everyone at the table.

Everyone stood, including me, until Vincenzo's voice halted me. "Lissy, you stay."

"Okay," I murmured, sitting back down, unsure whether to feel scared or defiant.

Davide, Domenico, and Giovanni left the dining room, leaving me alone with Vincenzo. Alone with him. His imposing presence filled the space as he studied me like I was a puzzle he didn't trust to solve.

"Lissy, you wanted to ask something?" He asked, his tone sharp yet calm, his brown eyes locked on me.

"Will you give me back my phone, please?" I asked, looking at him with as much composure as I could muster.

"No. It stays with me," he spat, his words landing like bricks.

"But why?" I pressed, genuinely confused by his harshness.

"Because I don't want you talking to that guy again," Vincenzo snapped, his expression unreadable. But there was something about it, something darker, beneath the surface.

"He's my only friend, please, brother," I blurted out.

The word brother slipped out before I could stop it. What was I even thinking? They didn't care about me. I didn't even know why I kept holding onto the hope that they did.

Vincenzo's eyes narrowed, his brow furrowing. Damn it, Lissy. Why do you always have to make things worse for yourself?

"Lissy, you can't be friends with someone who's part of Mexico's drug cartel," Vincenzo said coldly, his words cutting like knives.

"Drug cartel?" My stomach dropped.

"Yes. You didn't know?" His disbelief stung.

"I...I didn't know that. I only had an idea that my father was involved in something illegal, but he never told me anything."

A memory flashed in my mind of Miguel hitting me when I dared to ask him about his shady dealings. He hit me more than once that day.

"You won't contact Jose ever again," Vincenzo said, his tone final.

The thought of Jose being involved in something so dangerous...I couldn't wrap my head around it. The betrayal stung, but I knew Vincenzo was right. Jose didn't tell me, he kept a secret from me.

"What are you thinking?" Vincenzo's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

"That's terrible. I'll never contact him again,"
