Santino Romano

"I don't get it, why can't she remember me?" I asked, frustration evident in my voice as I looked at Marco.

"Santino, they hit her head. I'd be surprised if she remembered anything," Marco replied, his tone exasperated as if I were missing something obvious.

"She's been unconscious for three weeks! The first thing she asks me when she wakes up is who I am!" My voice cracked with the worry I was trying so hard to hide.

"I can't do anything about it, Santino. We just have to hope she remembers," Marco said, his hand clapping my shoulder in a weak attempt to reassure me.

"For fuck's sake, Marco, you're driving me insane," I muttered, frustration getting the best of me as I turned and stormed off toward Lissy's room.

As soon as I entered, she looked up at me with those big, innocent eyes—eyes that used to light up whenever she saw me. But now, they looked at me like I was a stranger. That look, it felt like a punch to the gut.

I sat beside her, doing my best to keep my composure. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?" I asked, trying to sound calm.

"My head hurts a little," she replied, squeezing her eyes shut before opening them again slowly.

"Want more medicine?" I offered, gently stroking her hair.

"Yes, please. Can you ask your doctor brother... what's his name again?" she asked, confusion in her voice.

"Domenico," I said, my voice heavy with the weight of everything. "He's our brother. He's just as much yours as he is mine."

"Right," she murmured, her gaze dropping to her lap.

"I'll be right back," I whispered, kissing her forehead lightly before stepping out of the room.

Once I was in the hallway, I felt the tears welling up. This whole situation was breaking me. She was so lost, and I couldn't fix it. There was nothing I could do but watch as she struggled to remember.

I made my way to Domenico's office. I didn't knock; I just walked in. Dante was there, nursing his broken arm from the crash, though he was healing up well.

"Lissy needs more medicine. Her headache's getting worse," I explained, sinking into a chair next to Domenico's desk.

"Still nothing?" Dante asked, his eyes full of sympathy.

"No. She asked for my doctor brother. Not her brother or even our brother, but my brother. She doesn't remember Domenico's name." My head dropped into my hands. I felt useless.

"It'll be okay," Domenico said softly, his hand on my shoulder. "She's a fighter."

"We need to help her with the memories. Matteo's bringing Jax from the vet later. Maybe seeing him will help jog something," Dante added.

I nodded. I remembered how her face lit up when she saw all those puppies. If I could make her that happy again, I'd do anything.

"Great idea," I said, standing up. "I'm going to get her back to herself."

"Where are you going?" Domenico called after me, giving me that big-brother glare.
