The scent of the cake wafted through the door. Lois breathed it in, savouring the sweet scent of lemon. As she breathed, her breath caught in her throat and she started to cough, in which lasted for about a minute. When she finally looked up, her eyes watering, her tall visitor Dan looked down on her with a worried expression in his face.

"I'm sorry, Daniel. I'll be back in a moment." Lois apologized with a rusty voice to Dan, turning to the kitchen and walking towards the stove quickly.

She pulled out the lemon cake carefully with her oven mitts, making sure that her wrinkled hands wouldn't get burned. A shot of pain ran down her back when she bent down, and she winced.

"You should really get that checked on by a doctor, Lois." Dan sighed.

"Really, now, Danny?" Lois grumbled. "I'm not going back to that doctor as long as I live. For that matter, I'm not going to a doctor's office ever again. I hate doctors."

"Why do you hate doctors?" Daniel asked, letting his curiously get the best of him.

"As if you don't already know!" Lois rolled her eyes. "Remember when you took me to that doctor, and she told us that we couldn't go in because they were too busy with another patient? And all that patient had was a little cough! She was hardly sick at all!"

"Lois, they had to take care of-"

"Oh, be quiet," Lois groaned. "It's harder when you get old like me."

Daniel didn't say anything more, just sat there with a annoyed look on his face. Lois turned her back to him and pulled out the cake, rolling her eyes.

"Fresh lemon cake..." She sighed. "If only Kyrelia were here. She enjoys lemon cake very much, you know."

"But it's March break, so why isn't she here?" Daniel questioned. He had met Kyrelia many times, being Lois' only 'friend' in the apartment building they lived in.

"She's been chosen for a school enrichment program." Lois smiled, her face wrinkling. "She's always been special, that one. Just like her mother." She sighed wistfully.

"Tell me, why doesn't she live with her parents? Why would she live with her grandmother?" Daniel asked.

"Her mother is dead," Lois answered hotly, obviously touchy on the subject. "And her father is a criminal."

"Oh." Daniel frowned. "That's no good."

"I enjoy her company," Lois sighed. "She's a nice girl, wouldn't you agree?"

Before Daniel could answer, they heard a loud ding come from her bedroom. "That'll be my phone," Lois said, placing the cake carefully on the granite counter and slipping off her oven mitts.

"I'm surprised you even have a phone." Daniel muttered, just loud enough for Lois to overhear.
