"what's life without a little risk?"
They left the garden shed as it began to grow dark outside. Lily, hugging Cleo tightly, told them to come by again tomorrow, and Cleo, Sirius, and Remus walked back to the inn. Remus got a room and said goodnight, and Cleo and Sirius made their way into theirs.
When they entered, Cleo announced that she was going to take a bath, and Sirius found himself sprawled out on their bed, picking up Cleo's book from the bedside table and flipping it open to a random page.
He had been reading for nearly 20 minutes when he heard the first stone hit the window. He lifted his head at the sound but shrugged it off quickly and returned to the page. In the connected bathroom, he heard the water in the bath shut off.
Then, another tap on the window, this time harder.
Sirius swung his legs off the bed and grabbed his wand, looking towards the dark window hesitantly. A third rock landed on the glass as Sirius crept towards it, wand at the ready. He peered out into the dark, and in the shadow of the streetlamp below them, he saw a boy in a jean jacket and round glasses gearing up to throw another rock.
Sirius yanked the window open.
"Prongs?" he hissed. "What are you doing?"
"Padfoot!" James grinned up at him. "I was just at home thinking... You brought your bike with you, right?"
Sirius nodded.
"Great. Are you up for a little adventure?"
And how, Sirius thought with a smirk, could he possibly say no to James Potter?
He rode the motorbike to James and Lily's house and parked it right outside on the street. He looked around nervously in the dark, fearful of the shadows that made him look twice. Sirius could hear Cleo's voice in his head, telling him what a stupid idea this was to be out at night when people were obviously looking for James. Still, what was life without a little risk? And the way that they had been living, the hiding, the secrets, the suspicions... Sirius told himself that it was no way to live.
Which is why, when James wheeled the abominable sidecar out from the back of the house and parked it in front of Sirius with a little "ta-da" of his hands, Sirius only grinned.
"Prongs, I think you're onto something here."
Perhaps it had not been one of his better ideas, but James had held onto the sidecar that attached to Sirius's bike since Cleo first bought it, perhaps for this very occasion. And Sirius had never taken James for a ride on the bike, and honestly, what better time would come?
"Alright Prongs?" Sirius yelled over the revving of the engine as he clipped his helmet on.
"Alright, Padfoot!" James yelled back, pulling a pair of goggles down over his eyes and giving him a thumbs up. And with that, they took off down the street.
