"hey little fighter, soon things will be brighter"
Almost two months passed. Time moved slowly at the Potter household, as if summer would never end. The house had a small shadow cast over it, though no one really wanted to discuss it.
Cleo was getting better, slowly. Sirius had managed to make her smile only a few weeks ago for the first time, and since then, she has been improving. She stayed quiet though for the most part, hardly speaking as much as she used to. Most of the time, she would sit silently with the boys as they joked or schemed, or help Euphemia around the house. Occasionally, she would crack a smirk or a smile, though it never brightened her eyes like they all so desperately wanted it to.
On her worst days, she would close herself up in the guest room she had been given and would sit on the window sill and stare at the world outside without so much as one peep. Everyone knew it would take time, and Cleo, as much as they absolutely hated to admit it, would never be her old self again.
"Cleo, come play with us," James called from where he was perched on his broom, hovering over the air. Sirius and James were playing a bit of Quidditch and even managed to get Remus into the air as well, but now it was an uneven number and they desperately wanted her to play. They had succeeded in luring her outside, but she stayed fairly quiet and out of the way.
Cleo sat under a tree, the shade cooling her off from the hot August heat. The cool grass felt heavenly on her bare legs, and she sat, just breathing, something she hadn't done in a long time. She smiled slightly and shook her head. "I can't play, James, you know that."
"Yes, but we could teach you."
"That would be a trainwreck."
"Please?" his big hazel puppy dog eyes watched her. She sighed, giving up.
"If I die, I'm blaming you," she wagged her finger at him. He came down to the ground, beaming wide as he went to the small garden shed across the yard and brought out another broom.
"Why do you have so many broomsticks?" Cleo asked.
"Sirius kept one of his here, then another one was my dad's," he said, handing her the broom. "This is my old one. She nearly won us the Quidditch Cup back in third year."
"Ah yes, this is the one you crashed into the Whomping Willow," Cleo nodded thoughtfully, staring at it. Then, she thrust it quickly back into his hands. "Nope."
"Oh come on, my crash was operator error, I promise. You're gonna be fine," he reassured her and gave it back to her. She took it, mumbling curses the whole way as she followed James back to the backyard where Remus and Sirius were tossing a Quaffle back and forth in the air.
"Alright, so you just-"
"I know how to ride it, James, I just don't like it," she rolled her eyes.
"Alright alright, little miss 'I can do everything'," he playfully glared and winked at her, making her lips turn upwards. He felt a little rise in his chest at the sight, feeling hopeful that their Cleo would come back to them one day.
"Ready?" James asked before kicking off from the ground.
"Yeah whatever," Cleo rolled her eyes and kicked off as well.
It turned out, Cleo was absolutely brilliant at Quidditch and beat James four times in getting the ball through their small makeshift Quidditch hoops. The boys were flabbergasted, watching as the girl who claimed she couldn't fly whizz past in a whirling flash of color expertly. James had stopped trying to beat her because he knew that he couldn't, and he sat back with his hand on his head watching in shock and awe at the dark-haired girl.
"What? Quidditch captain can't even beat little old me?" Cleo jeered playfully, smirking, the sunlight reflecting brightly in her crystal blue eyes. James looked at Sirius, who sat with a huge grin watching her, and Remus, who chuckled quietly at her antics. James laughed.
"I'm letting you win, love," he shrugged. "Trying to make you feel better."
"Alright then," she said and tossed the Quaffle up into the air. It sailed over James' head and he reached up to try and grab it, but Cleo came careening in in a 360 spin and snatching it right out of his grasp, ending up behind him. The ball was tucked under her arm casually as she smiled, a real, genuine smile.
"Thanks for making me feel better," she said with a laugh, and everyone could tell that she meant it in more than just Quidditch.
It was official. Their Cleo was coming back to them.
