"all we have is now."

They spent the morning eating as Lily cooked breakfast and baked pastries, while Sirius and James played with Harry and danced around the kitchen. A radio in the window was playing Christmas tunes softly. Cleo and Remus were sitting at the table, a game of wizard's chess between them. Cleo chewed her lip, deep in thought as she contemplated her next move.

"Any day now, love," Remus gloated, grinning as he saw she was stuck.

"Hush boy, I'm trying to think," she said without looking up from the board. She placed her hand on a piece as her eyes fluttered upward, and one look at Remus' face told her that it was not the right move. She brought her hand back to her lap.

"Do you want some chocolate?" he said, putting a piece in his mouth as he unwrapped one of his emergency bars he kept in his sweater pocket. She held her hand out simply and he placed a few pieces in her palm, chewing on them slowly while she continued to look at the board.

She made a move. Remus cussed loudly.

"No cursing in front of the baby!" Lily shouted from across the kitchen. Cleo smiled victoriously as she saw his brow furrow, focused on the game.

"Yeah, no fucking cursing!" Sirius and James yelled simultaneously. They turned suddenly and pointed at each other, mentally debating who was going to take the lecture from Lily.

"James!" she scolded. Cleo and Remus laughed and turned back to their game, but Cleo noticed that Remus was wincing slightly.

"It's coming up, isn't it?" she asked softly. She noticed while they were playing how Remus would shift uncomfortably in his seat, how dark the bags under his eyes were and how far his shoulders hunched.

"Cleo, it's Christmas," he whispered, a sad smile on his face. "Check."

"I know what day it is, I just worry," she shook her head. "Dammit Remus," she muttered as she realized she was losing their game.

Remus leaned forward, looking into her eyes. "I'm okay, you don't have to worry." Cleo's eyebrows furrowed.

"Never going to happen," she whispered, smiling. Her eyes went down towards the chessboard. She squealed, suddenly seeing a good move. "Check!"

Remus scoffed and took another bite of his chocolate, chuckling. Sirius came up behind them and looked down at the game, a bouncing Harry squirming in his arms. One of little Harry's hands was curled around a lock of Sirius' long hair, tugging gently. Sirius winced.

"Remus, move your knight in front of her-"

"Stop helping him!" she groaned, "I'm finally winning one of these!"

Remus happily moved his knight with a smug grin upon his face. Cleo hadn't won a game of Wizard's chess against Remus since she was 15 years old. Sirius chuckled and kissed the top of her head, leaning away with the rest of his body to try to keep Harry from kicking her.
