{why can't i find a way to protect her?}

When Cleo woke up the next morning, she couldn't help but feel a little bit more down than usual. Her talk with Sirius last night kept lingering in her mind, and the fact that she had lied straight to his face killed her slightly.

Not to mention that today was the 4 month anniversary of that day. She couldn't help but feel a bit depressed.

She got up, finding the girls' dorm empty except for her. She took her time slowly, not wanting to rush at all. She got dressed, brushed her hair, and grabbed her book bag, all with sluggish speed. She hardly got any sleep last night, and flinched when she examined her reflection in the mirror. She had large bags under her eyes and the irises were bloodshot from her lack of sleep over the last few months. Her nose was red and her lips were cracked and dry. What little sleep she had gotten last night couldn't have been good, as she must've been crying again.

She made her way slowly to the Great Hall. The tables were filled up with students eating their breakfasts contently, not having a care in the world except for what was happening in their classes today. Oh how she wished her life could be that simple again.

She trudged to the Gryffindor table, keeping her head down.

"Cleo!" a voice called behind her, and she turned around to find a dark haired seventh year boy with an emerald green tie around his neck. Skander, with a large grin, came bounding up and scooped her up in his arms, giving her a tight hug before letting go.

"I haven't seen you! Where have you been?" he asked her, still smiling.

"I've been here," she smiled back, but it did not reach her eyes. Skander's smile fell.

"What happened? Are you alright?" he asked her, concern flashing in his eyes.

"I-yeah," she sighed, closing her eyes briefly before opening them up again and looking back to him with a wider, and more genuine smile. "I just don't sleep much," she shrugged.

"Well, as long as you say you're okay," he still looked concerned, but he didn't push her. "How was your summer?"

That dreaded question again. "It was an interesting one," she nodded. "What about you?"

"Well, that's also what I thought I would come talk to you about," he said, quieter now and more solemn. He led her over to an empty part of the Gryffindor table and sat her down before sitting down in front of her on the bench. "It's my parents," he said softly. "My dad's turned dark. He came home with that awful tattoo on his arm, and my mum wants to leave," he said, looking her sincerely in the eyes.

"What are you going to do?" she asked, choking slightly. She knew Skander came from a pureblood Slytherin family, but from what she had heard, his family wasn't like most of them. Apparently, they had all thought wrong.
