"I love her and that's the beginning and end of everything." -- F. Scott Fitzgerald

The morning Sirius Black woke up alone, the sky was grim. The leaky window in the bedroom was fogged up as the rain outside turned into a downpour. Sirius jolted from his slumber where he was having a particularly upsetting dream, his hand instinctively reaching over to grab Cleo and hold her close, only to find the spot beside him empty. He pushed himself up from the mattress where he had been sleeping on his stomach and looked around the barren room; the only things in their new bedroom were an empty dresser on the far wall, the leaky window, a few of their suitcases laid open with clothes strewn about, and the mattress on the floor which he was currently on.

He sat up and shook his head, running his hands through his dark, long hair. It was starting to reach a little past his shoulders, curling on the ends, and it had started to drive him crazy. Maybe I should cut it, he thought to himself. He crawled up from the mattress and stood, stretching with his hands toward the ceiling. He heard voices coming from the living room, and dropped his arms quickly, a look of confusion written on his face.

He opened the door and the hinges squealed, and his footsteps padded against the wooden floors.

"You're joking? But I thought that-" Cleo's hushed voice sounded. Sirius turned the corner and walked into the living room and saw Cleo sitting at their island counter with a cup of tea in her hands, Remus beside her. They both looked up when he entered.

"Remus, we moved in two days ago and you're already crashing here?" Sirius chuckled.

"I just got here this morning for tea?" Remus scowled. Sirius walked behind them, kissing Cleo's cheek as he passed, and walking into the kitchen for coffee.

"We were just talking about Peter," Cleo caught him up to speed.

"Oh?" Sirius asked, not looking up. He was hesitant to speak about Peter in front of Remus, knowing that the chances of him being the spy James had told him about were too high.

"We just were saying that we haven't seen him since James and Lily left. He hasn't even reached out," Cleo added, looking sideways at Remus. "We aren't sure why."

"It wasn't that long ago, I'm sure he's fine," Sirius shrugged, turning around and leaning against the counter, his coffee held tightly in his other hand. There was a weird silence that followed, and Cleo could feel Remus' gaze. Finally, he stood up.

"This is weird, I should probably get going," he said quietly. "I've got to get ready for tonight," he smiled a pained, tight-lipped smile and shook the sleeves of his sweater down over his hands. Cleo stood up and hugged him tightly.

"Be safe tonight, yeah?" she pulled away, rubbing her thumb against his cheek for only a brief moment. Remus nodded shyly. He looked to Sirius, but they didn't say anything. Remus waved and Sirius nodded, lifting his coffee cup in the air as a sort of gesture. Remus awkwardly waited a moment and then turned and left, and Cleo waited until the front door shut.
