"keep your head high, and your middle finger higher"
Sirius was laying on his bed, his arms resting beneath his head as he stared at all of his posters on his dark walls. Pictures of Quidditch teams, of Muggle girls in bikinis on top of motorbikes, of the Gryffindor emblem, scattered his whole room. The sound of his mother shrieking all kinds of things could be heard from right outside his door, but he had locked it for a reason. He lay there, tapping his foot for a minute before reaching over to his bedside table and pulling out Cleo's Christmas gift.
It took him a moment to set up, but once he had the headphones covering his ears and managed to find what Cleo had called "the play button", the sound of static could be heard before a guitar riff and a drum beat came pouring through the speakers. He took a deep breath, drowning out the sound of his mother screaming completely and he smiled.
A few songs played before it went quiet again for a moment. Then, a voice.
"Hey there, Starboy," Cleo chuckled, and Sirius grinned. "I hope your mother isn't giving you too much hell right now if that's the reason you're listening to this. But since I did give it to you for that reason, I can assume that's exactly what you're doing," she ranted. "I hope you're alright. I mean, of course, you aren't, you are in that hellhole of a home, but I hope you yourself are okay," she continued. "This next song is 100% you in every way, which is why I put it on here," she chuckled, and Sirius kept smirking as he closed his eyes. "I guess I'll stop talking now because I don't have much else to say. Miss you Starboy," she said, and then a song came on. "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie began to play, and Sirius couldn't help but tap his foot along with the beat.
You've got your mother in a whirl
She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl
Hey babe, your hair's alright
Hey babe, let's go out tonight
Sirius couldn't wipe the smile off his face as the voices of all of his friends came on one by one. First, James ranted to him for a good 6 or 7 minutes on a topic that Sirius would not have been able to tell you because truth be told, James was just speaking without any direction. And then Remus said a few short things, mainly asking why he was doing this. Cleo could be heard whispering to him to just say something to Sirius before Remus sighed and said, "Hi Sirius. How are you? I'm spectacular, as always. Is that good enough?"
A few of the girls said something too, but the majority of everyone could be heard questioning Cleo and whatever the hell she was doing. Luna reminded Sirius to read some books or he'll be even more stupid when he came back for sixth year than he already was. Indiana just shouted "Piss off!" and then laughed, and while none of it was very comforting to anyone else who would have listened, all of it made Sirius feel more at home than he ever had been.
After quite a few more songs, a click sounded that indicated the tape was finished. Sirius was ready to start it again, but he noticed that it was strangely quiet in his home, and he didn't trust silence when it came to Walburga Black. He crept down the stairs quietly, kicking Kreacher as he went past because the House Elf was trying to scold him for being born. He stood behind the kitchen door, listening.
"Where's Regulus?" his father, Orion, asked. Sirius rolled his eyes. Typical of his parents to only wonder about their prodigal son.
"He's with the Dark Lord, at the Markis household," Walburga said, almost proudly. Sirius' breath hitched. Markis? As in his Cleo Markis?
His father only hummed, but Walburga felt it necessary to continue. "For good reason too," she huffed. "That little mudblood girl deserves whatever's coming to her right now." Sirius was seeing red, and before he could help it, he came out from behind the shadows.
"You take that back," he seethed. His mother turned around, a bit surprised, but gave him a smug look.
"Absolutely not. How dare you try to stand up for that no good, filthy blooded know it all! The Dark Lord is taking good care of her now, I can assure you. The filthy mutt deserves to die!" his mother shouted.
"The only person that deserves to die is you," he shouted, and the pain that came afterward was nothing compared to the anger he felt. When Walburga slapped him across the face, Sirius just smiled.
"Hit me harder, woman. You can do better than that," he grinned.
"Why you-ungrateful child! You are not my son!"
"Thank Merlin for that!" he shouted back, but he was already up the stairs. He packed all of his things quickly and came back down lugging his big heavy trunk behind him and marched to the front door, knocking over anything he could on his way by. Vases, picture frames, anything of value or importance, he threw to the floor. The satisfying shattering of glass still didn't overcome Walburga's screaming.
"You walk out of that door, Sirius, you're never to come back again! Do you hear me? Never!" she screamed.
"I wouldn't dream of it," he replied, almost calmly, before he sent his mother a tight-lipped smile and slammed the door of 12 Grimmauld Place behind him.
