"there's just something about you i'm scared to lose, because i know i won't find it in anyone else."
"Cleo?" Lily whispered as they all sat in the living room. Remus, James, and Sirius were talking quietly, Harry asleep on the couch beside James, and Peter sat by himself, lost in thought. "Come to the kitchen with me?" Cleo nodded, but a deep, unsettled feeling sunk into her chest. She followed Lily to the kitchen, and Lily began to make herself a sandwich, even though she wasn't hungry.
"How was Harry tonight?" she said after a moment of silence.
"He was perfect," Cleo replied earnestly, before she smiled. "Sirius created the coolest spell, he-"
"One of us is a spy for the Dark Lord," Lily pushed out quickly, her eyes shutting as she said it. She grimaced and opened her eyes to see Cleo's face. She had stopped, mouth agape as she tried to make sense of what Lily had just said.
"What?" she whispered, nearly unbelieving.
"Someone under this roof right now, is working as a spy for the Dark Lord," Lily said slowly, her voice hushed so as not to be heard.
"No I... I heard you I just..." Cleo's voice failed her. "How could you think that?" For a moment, she looked so pained that Lily almost regretted telling her, but she knew Cleo had to know. She and James had fought about who to tell the whole way home.
"Dumbledore says that one of us has been passing information, especially about Harry, to the Dark Lord. He knows more about Harry than he should, it has to be someone."
"Dumbledore doesn't know what he's talking about," Cleo argued, her eyes wide as she shook her head. It wasn't possible.
"I think he does," Lily sighed. "Cleo, Voldemort knows everything about Harry. How would he know about him at all if it weren't for one of you?"
The words slipped out before she could change them. Lily caught her mistake as soon as she said it, and she closed her eyes with regret.
"Now you think it's me?" Cleo asked angrily.
"No, that's not what I meant-"
"Lily, you and James and Harry, you mean everything to us. All of us. I mean, we're a family, we would never betray you, ever," her voice shook.
"I know," Lily rushed, grabbing Cleo's hands tightly, "I know you wouldn't. But can you say the same for all of them?" she nodded towards the direction of the living room. Cleo wasn't sure how to respond. Everything within her was screaming "yes", but how could she be sure?
"Cleo, I told you this because I know I can trust you," Lily's eyes scanned Cleo's face. The poor girl was staring at the ground, suddenly doubting every single one of her closest friends. "I need you to help us find out who it is, please," Lily begged.
