"If i were to constantly tell you i'm alright, would you ever believe me if i said i wasn't?"
Tonight was a very big night.
Cleo's nerves were fluttering as she sat on the edge of her bed. She chewed at her nails with angst as she thought about everything that could go wrong, but her thoughts were ripped away quickly when the bedroom door opened. His dark and stormy eyes watched her intently, looking almost as nervous as she felt. She stood.
"Are you ready?" Sirius said quietly, coming closer.
"I guess so," she whispered, holding onto the sleeves of his shirt tightly. "Are we gonna be any good at this?"
"I want to say yes," he chuckled, "but I've never done this before."
"Very reassuring," she replied. He smiled down at her, his face softening. He pressed his lips to her forehead gently and she closed her eyes, sighing.
"C'mon, they're leaving soon," he whispered. Cleo nodded and followed him downstairs. Tonight was the first night that James and Lily were leaving Harry with them, and Lily was rushing around nervously, attempting to come up with reasons why she should stay behind. James was bouncing Harry gently on his hip, pointing at himself in the mirror in the hallway.
"See Harry? That's you," he thrust the baby towards the mirror a bit. "You're so handsome," he cooed, before dropping his voice to a whisper as he said: "just like your father."
"Alright Prongs?" Sirius chuckled, stopping at the bottom of the stairs. Cleo was only a few paces behind and her hand was clenched around his tightly. She stopped behind him and comfortably threw her arms over his shoulders, resting her chin in the crook of his neck as she watched. She felt him lean into her slightly as she inhaled his scent. Although it felt strange sometimes to be so open about their relationship, Cleo couldn't help but love that she now had the freedom to kiss him and hold his hand whenever she felt like it. She wished now that they had both been less stupid and just fessed up to their feelings a long time ago, because now she felt as though she was touch starved; she craved the feeling of his presence close by, and that feeling was almost constant.
"Lily, stop pacing my dear, he's going to be fine," Cleo said, pulling away from Sirius. She maneuvered around him, squeezing his arm as she passed. "It's going to be fine."
"I know it will," Lily sighed, stopping in the entryway. "I just... maybe James should just go and I could stay here, I mean what if he-"
"Lils, Queenie and Padfoot are more than qualified to babysit for three hours," James reassured her, handing Harry to Cleo. His little feet, padded gently in his small blue onesie, kicked in the air as he reached for his auntie Cleo.
"And if worst comes to worst, Remus is here," Sirius added, just as Remus walked through the kitchen door to the living room with a large chocolate bar in his hand. He had a scar that was healing down the right side of his face from last week's full moon, but he was otherwise in okay spirits.
