"forever has a nice ring to it."
Sirius got back an hour later, his cheeks red from the cold and his hair blown back by the wind. Nevertheless, he had one of the largest smiles on his face Cleo had ever seen, so she was happy.
So happy, in fact, that she didn't even notice when he came back into the kitchen and kneeled right behind her with a small black box in his hand. She was too busy dancing as she helped get the last of the side dishes ready for dinner, but thankfully, Lily gasped loud enough for her to turn and see what was the matter, and there he sat.
Her hair was a mess and her cheeks were flushed, but he smiled when she looked down and saw him there, her blue eyes widening like two moons as she cupped her face in her hands.
"Sirius, what-"
"Cleo, I love you," he said quickly. He was out of breath but he had never felt so calm in his life. Her blue jeans and white sweater had flour from when she was rolling out dough, and she had a little on her cheek as well, but she never looked more beautiful to him in all his life. "I love you, and I've always loved you and I always will love you. Will you marry me?" His shaking hands opened the box and revealed a shiny diamond ring.
"Oh my god," James whispered from the table, and Lily shushed him. He didn't listen. "Can I start singing ABBA? 'Say I doooo'," he began, rather pitchy and terribly out of tune.
"James, I swear to God," Lily muttered through clenched teeth. Cleo was biting her lip and grinning down at an equally amused Sirius, just waiting for them to be finished so that she could answer.
And finally, with the excitement of a bursting nebula of stars, she said yes.
Dinner was busy, Cleo's mind buzzing with happiness as she looked around the table, as her friends sat talking over one another, laughing, and occasionally tossing food at each other. Sirius' hand rested on her leg, squeezing her knee every so often, a silent conversation being spoken that expressed their joy in one another.
"Alright everyone settle down," James said as he pushed his chair back and stood, raising his glass. Harry squealed and squirmed in his high chair as James replied, "Harry please, settle down now, Daddy's talking."
He cleared his throat. "I'm feeling very sentimental today, so I want to give a toast," he began, "to this group of Marauders here. You all have been my best mates since day one. Moony," he turned towards the boy in his enveloping sweater, "the day we met, I thought you and I weren't gonna get on. You were too quiet, but the things you would say under your breath got me into a lot of detentions, because I wouldn't stop laughing. I'm glad you came out of your shell, and no matter how anyone is feeling, you know how to make them better," James stopped, his hand on his chin as he thought for a moment. "See, that's the thing about Remus. He's very aware," his eyes widened as he slowly put his hands on his hips. "I guess you could say he's.... Aware-wolf?"
