Sometimes they really got my hopes up. They really made me believe that they were trying and that was more annoying then just coming from a split home.
I will admit it, though- I liked it better when they were dating one another, rather than when they dated new people.
At least then I didn't have to get the "be nice" lecture that always came after the "I met someone." I didn't have to be extra polite or anything like that- they already knew all my flaws, which was a plus, I guess.
Anyway, at that point in my life, I tried not to believe much of anything from either of them. I wanted them to be happy, of course, but I wasn't going to get excited over their absolutely chaotic relationship.
After all, these were two people that I had seen pick up entire chairs and throw them across the room- they weren't fooling me. I could see through it. I could see that they were both nervous about where they were headed, which wasn't a huge shocker to me.
They had always been very complicated and that's no exception now... they still struggle, I know they do sometimes and that's okay.
They hide it better now and I think, it's more private for them.
"This is weird." I was sitting at the kitchen table, brow raised as I stared across at my parents.
It was early- like way too early for Stevie to be up.... I mean, I was getting ready for school, so it had to have been before 7 in the morning.
"I think it's nice." Lindsey chuckled softly, glancing over at my mom like she was going to agree... and she did.
"Me, too." She returned the smile, which caused me to roll my eyes almost instantly.
"Did you even go to bed?" I knew her- I knew her really well, even though I didn't want to admit it.
She was my role model and my idol for a really long time... She still is, of course.
But Stevie didn't go to bed at a normal time- she still doesn't. She's like a bat... or a vampire. She would sleep all day long and stay up all night, no matter what. It was like she was nocturnal, or something.
"I'm trying to get on a better schedule." She nodded her head lightly, and that's when I knew that she was trying to fool everyone.
She had stayed up all night long- probably bouncing off the walls and as soon as we left, I was certain she was going to totally crash... She was trying to play it off well, but I knew that look in her eyes.
She hadn't fallen asleep at all.
"Since you're trying this whole new schedule thing, you should volunteer at my school this morning for homecoming." I gave her a mischievous grin, only to let her know that I was on to her... she couldn't lie to me anymore.
"That's a good idea," my dad was quick to agree.
The difference between my parents was that my father liked that kind of stuff and my mom didn't. Or it wasn't even that she didn't like it, she just never had the time for it.
Don't get me wrong, she was the kind of mother that came to big events with the most beautiful flower arrangement in hand, but the small things weren't her cup of tea.
