A Father, a Dad

There's a difference between a father and a dad.
That's something I came to learn when faced with having both.
A dad is the one who steps up,
When the other steps away.

Yes, you were my father,
That's an easy thing to be.
But a dad takes a lot more work to become,
Strength to stay when the father is weak enough to leave.

My dad flew my mother down,
Kids in hand,
Because he couldn't stand the thought of a man
Walking all over her plans.

You, my father,
You were the incessant jerk.
Incapable of the littlest bit of work.
And so you walked away so my dad could take your place.

There's a difference between a father and a dad.
And having both isn't all that bad.
Because if I got stuck with you on that fateful day,
I wouldn't be the way that I am today.
