Chance

I know that we're not speaking,
But while I'm still breathing
And your heart's still beating,
Does our every encounter need to be a chance meeting?

I look for you wherever I am in case you're there,
But you only ever are when I'm not aware.
It doesn't seem fair
That you're only ever around when I don't care.

I switch up my choices,
Start listening to the voices
Of friends who tell me to keep my poise.
I shouldn't give up my whole life for a boy.

You know I'm doing my best when you're not around.
I care less about how I sound.
I do much better, I have found,
When I let go of all my doubts.

But when you are here,
When you are near,
You fill me with fear.
I can no longer see myself so very clear.

I am a work of art,
Till it's you who can see all my damaged parts.
The idea of that sends me right back to the start.
Oh I hate all the things you do to my heart.

We don't need to speak,
But so long as I can still breathe
And, for you, my heart still beats,
Could you spare me a chance for us to meet?
