My Golden Locket

I used to have a golden locket.
In it I placed a paper heart.
Your name was written on the fold,
The one that would lie flat.

I placed it just so,
That the fold was at the back.
Stashed away,
So my love wouldn't be on display.

It was the first time I wrote your name,
And I erased it after that.
After all, you weren't mind to keep.
But I was yours every day of the week.

I used to have a golden locket.
I didn't wear it often.
But in it I kept a paper heart,
On which I wrote your name.

That locket would never stay closed,
As if it knew of my woes.
It would open when I was sad,
So I could see the paper heart I had.

Yes, I had a golden locket.
I think I have it still.
But that paper heart is long gone,
Your name along with it too.
