"I heard Elite and IMG are merging" my sister says.

My whole body freezes and I swallow down my throat. The fork in my hand clashes with the glass plate before I can hold on to it. I stretch out my hand and put on my best fake smile.

"Oh, really?" my mom brows widen.

I press my lips together, "Yes."

"Maybe your dream will finally come true, that if you work for it of course" though she's on the side of the table, I can still see the glint of evilness flashing in my sister's gaze.

Xander leans towards me, "What-"

"It's nothing." I dismiss him quickly.

"Mika doesn't need to work for it, her whole career speaks for itself. Besides, this time there won't be jealous wannabes trying to get on her way" Rowan steps in, glaring at Lydia.

Lydia returns, "Are you insinuating-"

"That's enough!" Mom warns, accessing both with a stern look which none dare to argue with, "This is the first family gathering we've had in months, let's not ruin it with petty arguments."

"Tell Lydia to stop provoking then" Rowan scoffs.

"That was not my attention at all, lil bro. I apologize if it came out that way, Mika I have no doubts you will reach everything you wish for" I force myself to hold back the eye roll.

The room goes quiet, no one knowing what else to say or just expecting me or Rowan to snark back again. Believe me, we'd love to do that but I know better.

Meeting my brother's gaze I give him a light shake of my head. It's not worth it. Though it pisses him off he knows not to act differently. That's exactly what she'd want, anyway.

"Anyone wants cheese?" gramps breaks the silence.

Dex shakes his head, "I told you this would be a total shit show" his voice low enough so only the few on our side can hear.

"Be grateful that at least it won't be boring" Aunt Diane generously sips from her drink, licking her lips at the end.

"Better not ask?" Xander whispers at my side.

"Feel free to do it" I wave a hand at him, shrugging as I bring my one glass to my lips, "But be aware I didn't promise to give you an answer"

He nods with a chuckle, "Touché"

"So, Ben, any news with that project you were working on?" Dad tries to change the subject, aiming for a recovery of the mood around the table.

"I've not heard of this yet, what is it about?" my curious grandmother joins in.

"Friendly-environment innovating strategies" Ben cleans his mouth with the silk napkin over his lap, adding then "Right now, we're exploring the micro plastic particles in exfoliating lotions"

"You have no idea of the scare he gave me when he begin rambling about my products having plastic" Lydia shakes her head with a grimace.
