"Mika, wait up!"
Ignoring Lane's callings, I stalk through corridor without looking back. My hands digs into my purse, reaching for the keys of my apartment as his footsteps become louder and louder.
Once I find them, I unlock the door and push it open, ready to close it back again when he places a flat hand on it. My weak attempts to slam it in his face fail, since he's clearly stronger than me.
"We need to talk." his tone is soft still.
I put on a fake smile, "I'm good, thanks."
He sighs, entering the apartment despite my clear lack of wanting this conversation to continue. Staring straight at me, Xander takes a deep breath and debates mentally on how to approach me.
"Don't let all the progress we did on the last week fade away because of a stupid misunderstanding." he pleads, sounding pained and exhausted.
"You disrespected me, Lane." I argue.
"I was trying to keep you from making the same mistake I once did. I'm sorry if my ways to do it weren't the best, I just saw red and acted on my emotions." he takes a step closer.
I take one backwards, "What mistake exactly?"
"I..." his body tenses, jaw clenching, "When I was younger I had the same dream as you, to work for Elite, soon after I got the job I regretted ever wanting it. They're not the blissful paradise they appear to be."
My arms stay crossed, "That doesn't give you the right to act like a caveman. I'm not made of glass, Lane, I can handle whatever comes my way."
"It's not worth it." he insists.
"No? You have everything you've ever wished for because of them, I'd say it's pretty much worth it!" I lift my hands dramatically.
"Everything I've accomplished can be easily done on any other agency, including yours. You know that just as much as I do, so why don't you tell me the actual reason this so important to you?" Lane quirks a brow.
"Because," I shrug, avoiding to look at him so I don't feel completely exposed, "It's like getting an 96% and not 100% on a test. It's stupid to be bothered by such little difference, but it's still budges me. Because I know I could have done better and I need that validation. There I said it."
"Need it to prove yourself to you or to others?" Lane surprises me by how easily he can see right through me, but I keep my ground.
I shrug, "Why does it matter?"
His brows visibly furrow at my words, as if it didn't make sense how I could say something like that so bluntly.
I watch as he steps closer, this time I don't back away and instead allow him to enter my personal space. He brings his hands to cup my face, so I look at him in they eyes as he says every word.
"You shouldn't be wasting your efforts and hard work on people who don't deserve it, angel. If they actually cared about you they'd be insanely proud of everything you've achieved, because you have, so much," his voice melts my every bone.
