The Great Hall is transformed for the Yule Ball preparations. Garlands of twinkling lights drape from the enchanted ceiling, which mirrors a clear, starry night. House banners are interwoven with festive decorations, and long tables are laden with golden candelabras and sparkling ornaments.
Students huddle in animated groups, their voices a harmonious mix of excitement and nerves. Conversations buzz around the hall about who's going with whom, the latest trends in dress robes, and the music that will be played. The air is filled with the tantalizing scents of pine and cinnamon, adding to the festive atmosphere.
In one corner, a group of girls giggle as they compare sketches of dress designs, while nearby, a group of boys argue about the best way to ask their crushes to the ball. The overall mood is one of eager anticipation and joyous chatter.
Y/N, with their distinct Black family features—dark hair and sharp eyes—walks through the hall, trying to dodge the enthusiastic offers of dates. They politely turn down each suitor with a kind smile and a gentle shake of their head, their eyes scanning the crowd for someone specific.
Sirius, ever the doting and playful twin, catches up with Y/N. "You know, if you keep turning everyone down, people will start to think you're going with me," he jokes, throwing an arm around their shoulders.
Y/N laughs, nudging him playfully. "As if you'd go with your twin to the ball, Sirius. I'm just...waiting for the right person to ask."
Sirius raises an eyebrow, intrigued. "Waiting for someone special, huh? Anyone I know?"
Y/N looks away, a slight blush creeping up their cheeks. "Maybe," they mumble, their thoughts drifting to Remus.
Sirius's playful grin turns into a mock-serious expression. "Well, it better not be Snape or Malfoy. Or even worse, McLaggen. I swear, if it's McLaggen..."
Y/N quickly shakes their head, a small smile playing on their lips. "Actually, Malfoy did ask me. But don't worry, I declined. Absolutely none of them, I promise."
Sirius's face softens, a genuine smile replacing his earlier expression. "Good. Because you deserve someone who will treat you right. Someone who sees how amazing you are. And if they are not like that, they have to get through me first!"
Y/N's smile widens, but they say nothing, their mind still on Remus. "Thanks, Sirius. That means a lot."
Meanwhile, from another spot in the Great Hall, Remus sits at a corner table, his face partially hidden behind a book, but his eyes frequently dart toward Y/N. He's aware of every movement they make, every laugh they share with Sirius, and every smile they give to those who ask them to the ball.
His heart races with every passing moment, filled with a mix of admiration and longing. He knows he wants to ask Y/N, but doubts plague his mind. What if they say no? What if they laugh at him? What if they choose someone else?
James and Peter sit across from him, exchanging knowing glances. James nudges Peter and whispers, "He's hopeless, isn't he?"
Peter nods, his eyes never leaving Remus's anxious expression. "Completely. We've got to do something."
Remus, lost in his thoughts, barely notices their conversation. He's too busy imagining a scenario where he has the courage to walk up to Y/N, to look into their eyes, and to ask them to the ball.
He sighs deeply, closing his book with a resigned thud. "I just... I don't think I'm their type," he mutters, more to himself than to his friends.
James, ever the motivator, leans in. "You'll never know if you don't try, Moony. Besides, I have a feeling they're waiting for someone exactly like you."
