The bullpen of the Behavioral Analysis Unit hummed with the steady rhythm of keyboards clicking and phones ringing, punctuated by the occasional burst of laughter or heated debate. Amidst the controlled chaos, a new figure sat quietly at a desk near the back of the room, their eyes darting across the screen of their laptop as they familiarized themselves with the case files spread out before them.
Y/N had only been with the BAU for a few weeks, but already they had begun to feel at home amidst the eclectic mix of personalities and expertise that made up the team. As the newest member of the unit, they were still finding their footing, eager to prove themselves and make a positive impression on their colleagues.
Lost in their thoughts, Y/N barely noticed when Dr. Spencer Reid—the resident genius of the BAU—approached their desk, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips.
"Excuse me," Reid said, his voice soft but carrying a hint of excitement. "I couldn't help but overhear that today is your birthday. Is that correct?"
Y/N blinked in surprise, caught off guard by Reid's sudden attention. "Uh, y-yes, that's right," they replied, a faint blush creeping into their cheeks.
Reid's smile widened, and with a flourish, he produced a small package from his messenger bag. "In that case, happy birthday, Y/N! I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of getting you a little something."
Before Y/N could protest, Reid had already handed them the gift—a beautifully wrapped box adorned with a simple bow. Curious, Y/N carefully untied the ribbon with grace as they moved over to open the package. Reid watched intently, a mixture of excitement and nervousness fluttering in his chest. He had spent hours agonizing over the perfect gift, hoping to convey his warm welcome and genuine appreciation for Y/N's presence on the team.
As Y/N peeled away the white paper covering the gift, Reid held his breath, his heart pounding in anticipation. Would they like it? Would they be touched by the gesture? Reid's mind raced with questions, each one tinged with a hint of uncertainty.
But then Y/N's face lit up with a smile, and Reid felt a surge of relief wash over him. Revealing a leather-bound notebook and a set of colored pens, Y/N took it out of the box.
"I noticed you've been taking a lot of notes during our briefings," Reid explained, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "I thought these might come in handy for organizing your thoughts and keeping track of your observations. Consider it a welcome gift from one profiler to another."
Y/N was speechless; they couldn't help but feel a warmth spread through their chest at Reid's thoughtful gesture. They had only been with the BAU for a short time, yet Reid had taken the time to not only remember their birthday but also to select a gift that showed he had paid attention to their interests and needs.
"I, I don't know what to say..." Y/N's gaze shifted from the gift to Reid, a mixture of surprise and gratitude in their eyes.
Reid's smile widened at Y/N's response, his own sense of satisfaction evident in his eyes. "You don't have to say anything, Y/N. I'm just glad you like it."
Y/N felt a rush of gratitude towards Reid, touched by his thoughtfulness and generosity. They had been apprehensive about joining the BAU, unsure if they would fit in with such a talented and close-knit team. But Reid's gesture made them feel welcomed and accepted in a way they hadn't expected.
Taking a moment to compose themselves, Y/N met Reid's gaze with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Spencer. This really means a lot to me."
Reid's smile softened, his eyes reflecting genuine warmth and understanding. "You're welcome, Y/N. I know starting a new job can be overwhelming, but just know that we're all here to support you."
