Finally reaching the open expanse of the Last City, Y/N's eyes immediately welled up in tears. At first, they only noticed Thomas. However, as they looked closer, there was another person there, or rather, a body.
Thomas looked up, his gaze etched with pain and grief. Trying to breathe, Y/N stepped forward, scared of who that body belonged to. As they got closer, Thomas stood up, his entire body shaking, before he slowly turned around. In a matter of seconds, he began to walk away, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the Last City.
Y/N's breath caught in their throat as they watched him go before turning towards the body lying motionless on the ground. They couldn't believe it... It felt like their whole heart shatter into a million pieces. Newt...
Rushing to his side or attempting to as the tears flowed faster than they could be wiped away. Finally, in despair, Y/N collapsed to their knees beside him. Desperation clawed at Y/N's throat as they scanned his body.
Newt's once vibrant features were now distorted by the ravages of the Flare virus. Black veins snaked their way across his pale skin, pulsing with an unnatural energy. Dark, viscous fluid oozed from the corners of his mouth, staining his lips and chin with a sickly hue.
However, it was not that which drew Y/N's eye. It was the dagger in his unmoving chest. There was no movement, nothing. At this point, they could hardly see. Their tears act as a blanket over a person's face.
"Newt," Y/N whispered, their voice choked with emotion. "Please, don't leave me."
With a sob of frustration, Y/N turned back to Newt's face, their hands shaking as they brushed the hair from his forehead. "Please... I, I need you." They breathed out as they reached out to touch his cold, clammy skin.
The tears wouldn't leave their eyes as they pressed a kiss to his forehead, silently praying for a miracle that would never come.
"It can't be true," Y/N concluded as they gave a firm nod. "Yeah, that must be it. It's just your mind playing a trick on you—a horrible, stupid...trick." However, Y/N knew it was not a trick. They just didn't want to believe it; they couldn't.
Newt was like the sun in their life, bringing warmth and hope to even the darkest moments in the Glade. But now, with him lying still before them, it felt as if all that brightness had vanished. The heaviness of his absence pressed down on Y/N, making it hard to breathe.
Their whole body shook with grief, each breath shallow and strained as if something tight squeezed their chest. It was like a huge wall had formed inside them, blocking every attempt to catch a breath.
With trembling hands against their chest, Y/N struggled to fill their lungs, but it felt impossible, like fighting against a force of nature. Tears poured down their cheeks, each one a sign of the immense pain they felt.
Their tears fell onto Newt's unmoving form, each dropping a silent plea. A plea that he would magically wake up... Wake up to the Newt they knew and loved.
As Y/N's mind raced, memories of their time with Newt flooded their thoughts, Y/N's heart ached with a mixture of longing and sorrow. They remembered the first time they arrived in the Glade, disoriented and scared, and how Newt had been there to offer a reassuring smile and a helping hand.
They remembered the countless nights spent talking under the stars, sharing hopes and dreams for a future beyond the Maze. They remembered the way Newt's laughter could chase away even the darkest of shadows, filling their world with light and warmth.
But now, all of those memories felt like cruel reminders of what they had lost. The laughter was silenced, the smiles faded, and the future they had imagined together lay shattered at their feet.
With a heavy heart, Y/N reached out and gently traced the contours of Newt's face, memorizing every line and curve as if to hold onto him just a little while longer. They wanted to stay in this moment forever, to freeze time, and to keep Newt with them forever. But they knew that was impossible. The reality was cruel and unforgiving. And Newt was now gone.
Tears continued to stream down their cheeks, each one a silent testament to the depth of their grief. They wanted to scream, to rage against the unfairness of it all, but their voice caught in their throat, choked by the weight of their sorrow.
Y/N didn't know what to do. Every sense they once had was clouded—everything. The only thing that came through was how Newt would never see the daylight again. Newt would never laugh again. Newt would... would never know how much...
Shutting their eyes forcefully, Y/N tried to take a deep breath before their thoughts could go any further. "Newt," they whispered softly, their voice trembling with emotion. "You were my light in the darkest of times, my anchor in the storm. I can't imagine facing this world without you by my side."
Tears continued to stream, each one a silent testament to the depth of their grief and the intensity of their love. "I wish I could have told you how much you mean to me," they murmured, their voice barely above a whisper. "I wish I could have held you close and whispered those three little words that have been burning in my heart since the moment I met you."
In their mind's eye, Y/N imagined a different world, a world where they had reached Safe Haven together, where the sun shone brightly overhead and the air was filled with the sweet scent of freedom. They pictured themselves sitting side by side, watching the sunset, as they shared their hopes and dreams for the future.
"I would have told you then," they continued, their voice growing stronger with each word. "I would have taken your hand in mine and looked into your eyes, and I would have told you that I love you. I would have told you that you are the most important person in my life and that my world is brighter and better because you are in it. I would have told you that the moment you die, my soul and future would go with you."
But as the reality of Newt's absence weighed heavily upon them, Y/N knew that those words would forever remain unspoken, lost to the cruel hand of fate. And so, with a heavy heart and tears still streaming down their face, they pressed a final kiss to Newt's forehead, silently whispering their love into the void.
"You were always too good for this world, Newt," they whispered softly. "Too pure, too kind-hearted. You deserved so much better than what fate had in store for you. And I am so grateful that you were the first person I saw after being sent up into the Glade.
With a heavy heart and tears still streaming down their face, Y/N leaned forward and gently kissed two of their fingers. With trembling hands, they reached out and tenderly placed those fingers on Newt's lips, lingering for a moment as if to imprint the touch of their love upon him.
"Goodbye, Newt," they whispered softly, their voice choked with emotion. "I will carry you with me always, in my heart and in my memories."
