JUNE
Grabbing my keys, I dash down the stairs in a rush because I'm already running late. I stop by the front door to slip on my shoes and as I do, I call out to my mom.
"I'm heading over to the Rigbys'! I'll be back tomorrow!" I shout. I have my hand on the doorknob, just about to make it out, when she responds.
"Jaxon James Favero!" She yells. Shit, I'm in trouble now. "You better bring your sorry behind in here and give me a proper goodbye!"
I sigh and turn to walk into the kitchen. As I pass by the open door of dad's study, he calls out to me.
"Boy, you better not piss off my wife before you leave for college. I'll send her right along with you!" He teases and I laugh at the thought.
"I won't, Pop." I tell him and continue on to the kitchen.
When I come around the corner, the first thing I see is my mom's white-blonde hair. It's much lighter than mine is now, but when I was a kid, mine was just as bright. Her hair is piled on top of her head in a messy bun, and she's got a pale blue apron tied around her waist and she's covered in food.
"Jeez, mom. You're supposed to cook it, not wear it." I laugh while stealing a warm cookie off a cooling rack.
"Oh, bite your tongue, Jax." She swats at me. "Now, what were you so rudely yelling from the front door?" She pins me with a stern look.
"I'm going to the Rigbys'. I'll probably crash there, so I'll be back tomorrow." I tell her, shoving the rest of the cookie into my mouth.
"Movie night?" She asks, already knowing the answer. My mouth is still full so I just nod. "Sure you're not just trying to avoid all the excitement here?" She teases.
My 8-year-old sister Molly is having a sleepover tonight with a horde of her friends, and it's definitely not something I want to be around for. Last time they stayed over, I woke up covered in makeup and glitter that took days to get out of my hair.
"Happy coincidence?" I shrug my shoulders and laugh.
"Mmhm. Sure." She smiles at me. "When will you be back tomorrow?"
"Not sure. We'll probably go to Benny's for breakfast, so after that, I guess. Not sure what the plan is for tomorrow yet." I tell her.
"Alright. Drive safe and call me if the plan changes, okay?" She raises her eyebrows at me.
"You got it, mom." I round the counter and give her a kiss on the cheek. "See you later."
"Jax?" She adds when I turn to leave. I spin back to face her, and she continues. "Remember: you are a gentleman and a role model. Act like it when you're with the Rigby family." I give her a solemn nod and turn to leave.
