A shrill sound jolts me from sleep, and I bolt upright in my bed. I groan and look around for the source of the sound.

     Riiiinnngggg Riiiinnngggg

I look over at my nightstand and realize the sound is my phone ringing. I glance over at the alarm clock beside it.

     3:18am

I pick up my phone and flip it over to check the caller ID. The name on the screen sends a wave of uneasiness through my body.

Why is Carter calling me so late?

I quickly tap the green button to answer her call and put the phone to my ear.

     "Car?"

"OhmygodAsher!" Her voice breaks as her words run together. She keeps speaking but I can't make out any of her words through her crying.

"Carter. Carter! Slow down. Take a breath. What's wrong?" I try to calm her enough to speak clearly. I hear her take a deep breath, but her voice still breaks when she speaks again.

"It's Tiana. Asher... something happened." The fear in her broken voice makes my blood run cold.

"Carter, what happened to Tiana? Is she okay? Where is she?" My words are quick and clipped as panic fills my stomach.

"She's in the hospital. Asher... She was attacked. It's- it's bad, Asher." Carter starts to cry again.

"What hospital? The one in town? Is she at East Valley?" I ask, already throwing my blankets off and moving around my room, pulling on clothes.

"Yeah, we're at East Valley. But, Asher?" She says softly.

"Yeah?" My keys are already in my hand as I slip on a pair of sneakers.

"Can you call Ryker? I called you first and I don't think I can call him, too..." Her voice trails off.

"Of course. I'm on my way, Car. I'll be there soon, okay?" I tell her as I walk through my quiet house and out the front door.

     "Okay." Her voice is small.

I hang up the phone as I get into my truck. I pull on my seatbelt and set my phone in the dock on my dash. I quickly pull up Ry's contact, hitting 'call' and putting it on speaker before turning the key in the ignition. The phone rings several times as I pull out of my driveway and begin driving to his house.

"Ash, why the hell are you calling me right now?" His groggy voice comes through the speaker of my phone.

"It's Tiana." The way I say the two little words seems to jolt him fully awake.
