Two weeks.
Bastiana has been gone for two weeks, and I haven't heard from her at all. Not a single call or text, nothing.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The last time I saw her I ruined everything by kissing her. How could I have been so stupid? I held back my feelings for her for more than three years, and just as I'm about to leave for college I lose control? Stupid.
I flop back on my bed with a frustrated groan just as my mom walks past my bedroom door.
"Everything okay, Jax?" She asks, poking her head in through my open door.
"Just peachy." I roll my eyes at the ceiling before turning to look at her. "I'm just an idiot sometimes."
"We all have our moments, Hon." She gives me a half smile. "What's got you so upset?"
"Well," I pause to sit up and lean back against my headboard. "I think I may have really messed things up with the Rigbys." I tell her honestly.
"Is this why you've been home so much recently?" She asks, coming in to sit in my desk chair.
"Yeah." I scoff. "I've been too afraid to face the music, so I've been avoiding Riggy." I sigh.
"Well, maybe you should go over there and try to patch things up, Jax." She says softly. "You two are going to be on the same campus in a month, so it might be better to work things out now."
"I know. You're right." I sigh. "I just don't know if I can fix it this time. Maybe I should just head to OSU early and join the summer orientation with the team."
"Sweetheart, what happened? Do you want to tell me about it?" She asks gently.
I consider telling her, asking for her help even, but I'm too ashamed to tell her what I've done. Bastiana is my best friend's sister, who's two years younger, with a boyfriend, and I kissed her anyway.
"I think this is something I have to figure out myself." I tell her. "But, thank you. For the offer."
"Of course, Jax. You can always talk to me." She smiles before she gets up to leave, but turns back to add one more thing. "But I do think you should go fix things with Riggy instead of hiding out here. Best friends are important. And if you really want to go to campus early, dad and I will make it happen." She adds.
"Thanks, mom." I sigh again. She walks away and I sag against the cool wall of my room.
She's right. I should go over there and face the music. Riggy's texted me a dozen times in the last two weeks to come over, but I've been too afraid. Afraid of what Bastiana might have told her or their mom. If she told them everything, I could be walking into a firing squad. If she told them nothing, I've been avoiding my best friend for the last two weeks and may still be walking into a firing squad.
