"Who even chose this chaotic line up?" Abi asks as she looks through the cases on top of the DVD player.
"I did! Don't be mean!" I smack her lightly on the arm as I take the cases from her. "They're not that bad, are they?" I look down at my choices. "The Goonies is a classic!" I defend it.
"Okay, that one is a good one, but come on." She takes the second case from me, holding it up. "Dazed and Confused? Seriously?"
I laugh softly, looking over at Asher and Ryker. Ryker is shaking his head gently and Asher is trying to hold in a laugh.
"I just thought it would be funny." I shrug nonchalantly.
"Whatever, but what's up with the last one?" Abi asks, looking down at the third case in my hands.
"What's wrong with Love, Simon?" I ask carefully, giving her a calculated look.
She holds eye contact with me for a minute before she speaks. "Nothing, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it." She says slowly.
"Thank you." I say quietly before turning back to the rest of the people in the living room. "Now, who's ready for the last movie night of the summer?" I ask.
"Let's just get this over with." Carter rolls her eyes as she drops down on the couch next to Dillon. "This whole line up sounds like a snooze fest."
"Carter, behave yourself or I'll send you to bed early." Mom pins her with a stern look from her spot on the recliner. Carter huffs but settles back on the couch. I mouth a quick 'thank you' to mom as Abi takes the spot on the other side of Dillon.
"I love The Goonies!" Dillon claps happily.
"Of course you do, Dil." Ryker looks over at him from his spot on the floor. "Miss Josie raised you right." He holds up his fist to Dillon, who happily taps it with his much smaller one then turns to look at Asher, who smiles and gently fist bumps him.
I put the first disc in before taking my spot on the floor between the guys. "Here we go!" I smile and press play.
The first two movies go smoothly. Dillon giggles happily through most of The Goonies and even Carter cracks a smile at one point. During Dazed and Confused, mom smiles and laughs, making jokes about her own misspent youth that make us all laugh. The guys and I trade knowing looks and whispered jokes about getting me high for the first time when I got back from camp.
As I put the third movie in, my nerves start to grow in the pit of my stomach. I chose this movie for a very specific reason.
I'm coming out to Asher and Ryker tonight.
My palms start to sweat as I sit back down in my spot and start the movie.
When I was deciding what movies I wanted to watch tonight, I wanted to find a way to subtly broach the topic, without being too obvious about it, but I think I might have missed the mark a bit.
