After I park in my driveway, I turn off the car, take my seatbelt off, and let out a deep breath.
Today was a good day. I tell myself. It was.
I got to start the day with my favorite person. I close my eyes and remember the way Tiana laid against my shoulder at the diner this morning. I didn't like to see her tired, but I did like having her body pressed against my side.
I also think back to that sexy little sound she made as she took her first sip of coffee with her eyes closed. That sound has been playing over and over again in my head all day, and I know it'll show up in my dreams later, too.
I keep my eyes closed as I remember the way her small hand gripped my knee under the table when she got excited about having a bonfire tonight. She looked up at me with pleading eyes, as if I'd ever tell her no. I easily agreed to a bonfire tonight.
I open my eyes and sigh. I reach over to grab the bag of snacks Tiana left in the front seat and notice her little purple water bottle still sitting in the cup holder. I smile to myself. This girl never remembers her water bottle. I pick up the bottle as well and get out of the car.
I decide to walk around the back just in case dad is passed out in the living room again. I leave the side gate unlocked after I pass through it, so Ash and Tiana can just walk in. As I walk through the backyard, I drop the bag and the bottle next to the firepit and move to grab the camping chairs from the sunroom off the back of the house.
While I'm in there, I open the window and set the Bluetooth speaker up against the screen, knowing Tiana will want to play music. I grab our chairs on my way back outside.
As I set up the chairs, I think about the first day I brought them out last summer. I hadn't thought much about it when I bought them, other than the fact that we needed new chairs because the old ones were getting gross.
When I went to get them, I decided to pick specific ones for each of us, instead of the same boring green ones from before. I picked up a black and red one for me, the same colors as my football jersey. I grabbed a camo chair for Ash since he comes from a military family and will likely join up after graduation.
As I looked down the row of camping chairs, I debated which one Tiana would like best. I must have stood there for 15 minutes looking at fucking camping chairs. I shake my head at the memory. This girl can reduce me to a blithering idiot without even being present.
There was a pink one. Girls like pink, right? No, I knew Tiana better than that. She hated pink. What about blue? She likes blue. Then my eyes landed on the perfect chair for my Tiana.
I picked up a chair from the end of the shelf. It was a deep shade of purple, so dark it was almost black. She'll like this one, I'm sure of it.
