"Kakashi, I need to talk to you."
Kakashi sighed before biting his bottom lip. Hana knew that she had been acting strange all night, and she had seen his insecurities grow as the evening went on, but there was something they absolutely needed to talk about. She sat on the bed, and he sat beside her.
"Please, just do it gently. I still really love you."
She burst into tears at his heartbreaking words, even though she knew they were coming. He was always so sure that she was pushing him out the door.
"I'm not breaking up with you! I think I'm pregnant!"
He went from crying to quiet from the apparent shock.
"What?"
Hana was now sobbing uncontrollably.
"I'm too afraid to test alone! I'm freaking out! What are we going to do? You're so busy as the Hokage! I didn't mean to put this kind of pressure on you-"
But he was already wrapping her in a hug and laying her down on the bed, holding her. He shushed her gently.
"I'm not too busy to start a family with you."
She held him too, gripping onto the back of his undershirt.
"This wasn't part of the plan..."
"It still might not be."
"I'm pretty sure I am. I'm a week late and bloated. Emotional."
He gave her a little kiss."
"Let's test and we'll go from there. But anything that we've made between the sheets can only be made from love..."
"Or in the shower, or on the kitchen counter, or at the hot spring..."
Kakashi laughed as Hana kept naming off all the places they'd been wild recently.
"We have a great relationship, and a child with you would be a blessing. No matter where we made it."
Hana pulled him in closer, cradling his head in her arm as she kissed him sweetly before resting her forehead against his.
"Okay, I'll test. You make it sound so romantic."
"I promise that if the test turns out to be positive, Ill spoil you both. I was going to spoil you anyway, but now I'll have to be twice as good at it."
She got up, opening the dresser drawer and taking the test out. He got up, following her out to the bathroom. She sat down and unwrapped it shakily. Kakashi got to his knees and helped, taking the wrapper in sturdier hands and uncapping it before handing it back to her.
"You don't have to be this close..."
He shrugged.
"I don't know how else to support you. I can hold it while you pee."
She laughed, pulling him in and kissing him gently before peeing on the stick. She capped it, wiped, flushed, and then they waited on the floor in front of the vanity. Kakashi spoke.
"Two minutes."
"Two long minutes. Any last words, Hatake?"
He glanced over at her.
"If it's a boy, I want another Hatake."
She smiled and rolled her eyes. They'd already been over this: if the man chooses to keep his last name, then male offspring usually get the father's clan name. Girls get the Inuzuka clan name regardless. It was an aggressively matriarchal system with equally aggressive matriarchs, but that's how it had been for generations. And she liked it that way. Kakashi had kept his own name since he was the Hokage and the last of his clan.
"Duh, yeah."
"Duh, okay. Do you have anything you want to add? Last words."
She looked over at him.
"Yeah, why are you always afraid that I'll leave you? You're less worried about having a baby with me than me leaving you."
He shrugged.
"I've had so many people leave me, by choice or not. And honestly, I've never had anyone so important in my life. I love you, and I love the life you've given me."
"I haven't given you this life-"
"You have. You gave me a clan home, and a mom and brother. And a loving partner. You've invited me into your life, and you've shared it with me. And I'm more grateful than you could imagine. I don't know, I think a part of me is always worried about when all of this will disappear. It's so comforting, and I'm so grateful. I've never had such a comforting place to call home, and I feel like I belong."
He had never put it into words for her and she put a hand over her mouth.
"Oh, Kakashi. Even if we did break up for some reason, god forbid, this is still your family. We will always be your family. I love you. I want to marry you. I want to give you little Hatakes and Inuzukas, even though I wasn't planning on doing it this soon..."
They gazed at each other for a moment. Finally, he spoke.
"Thanks, Han. That means a lot."
"No more talk about me leaving. I'm not leaving. A bad day or a bad mood doesn't mean shit. I love you too much to just walk away from everything that we've built."
They kissed gently. It was the reassuring kiss that she needed, and that he probably needed as well. He spoke quietly.
"It's been two minutes."
Reaching up, he took the test from the vanity. They both looked at the little plastic window, which had a bold cross in it. A positive test. Hana took a deep breath, feeling the chill rolling down her spine. She was trying to breathe deeply and not panic. Kakashi was staring at the test in disbelief. Was he about to freak out?
"I'm... I'm going to be a dad. We're having a baby."
Hana felt like she couldn't move, except for the uncontrollable trembling that her body was doing. This was happening. It was one thing to suspect it, but it was something else to confirm it. She was pregnant. She wanted to be happy, but she couldn't feel anything but shock.
"We're having a baby, Han."
Kakashi was trying to process it out loud, but she couldn't. She sat there, trembling for what felt like an eternity. That was before Kakashi got up and picked her up off of the floor, carrying her to their bed. Putting her under the blankets, he curled up around her, holding her. He was warm and comforting as he quietly held her against himself.
This was the father of her child. This was the love of her life. There was no one else she would rather be doing this with, even though they weren't planning on doing this yet. It took her a moment, but she slowly scooped her arms around his middle, holding him. He felt so warm in her arms.
"I love you, Kashi."
"I love you too, Han."
"We're having a baby. I'm pleased, but very surprised."
"It's going to take a while to process. It's okay."
He continued to hold her as she eventually fell into an uneasy sleep.
