Hoseok sat in the passenger seat, clutching the credit card tightly in his hand. He stared out the window, his hand outstretched to feel the rush of air against his palm as the truck sped down the highway. Tears prickled his eyes. It felt too good to be true—nothing good had ever happened to him, and yet, here he was, escaping from his tormentors. The sensation was surreal, like a dream he was afraid to wake up from.
He glanced over at Sangho, whose eyes were fixed on the road ahead. The man wore an earpiece, focused and silent, and Hoseok couldn’t help but feel thankful, even though Sangho didn’t seem particularly interested in talking. Gathering his courage, Hoseok whispered, “Thank you.”
Sangho’s head snapped to the side, his eyes meeting Hoseok’s for a brief moment. A small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, and Hoseok was surprised that the man had not only heard him but had also responded with a smile.
“You’re welcome,” Sangho said, his voice gruff but kind before he turned his attention back to the road.
Hoseok nodded, sniffling as he wiped his eyes. He glanced at the side mirror, half-expecting to see the brothers’ car in hot pursuit. But the road behind them was empty, and yet the anxiety gnawed at him, the fear that this was all too good to be true.
After a moment of silence, Hoseok turned to Sangho, his voice trembling slightly. “How is the doctor going to escape?”
Sangho chuckled, his shoulders relaxing as he remembered the plan. “The doctor found someone who looks just like you. He bribed him to act as you, to pretend you were dead. That means the brothers think you’re dead now.”
Hoseok gasped, his eyes widening in disbelief. “How did the doctor even come up with that?”
Sangho shrugged, a hint of admiration in his tone. “The man was determined to save you, Hoseok. He wasn’t going to let them win.”
Hoseok’s heart swelled with gratitude. He didn’t know how he would ever repay the doctor for what he had done. “I’m so grateful… I don’t even know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything,” Sangho replied, pulling the truck into the airport parking lot. “Just stay safe.”
Hoseok’s hands trembled as he stepped out of the truck. Sangho handed him his luggage, and Hoseok took it with a nod, following Sangho into the airport. The bustling terminal felt overwhelming, the noise and movement all blending together as Hoseok focused on keeping his nerves in check.
They approached security, and an officer took Hoseok’s luggage, carefully searching through it. Hoseok held his breath, his heart pounding in his chest. But the officer nodded in approval, finding nothing suspicious, and handed the luggage back to Hoseok.
“Have a safe trip,” the officer said before his gaze shifted to Sangho. “And who are you?”
Sangho smiled, lying smoothly. “I’m his brother. Just seeing him off.”
The officer nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer, and guided them toward the registration booth. Hoseok followed, praying that everything would continue to go smoothly.
At the booth, a woman sat behind the counter, and Hoseok handed her his passport. She glanced at it, then up at Hoseok. “Which country are you traveling to?”
“France,” Hoseok replied quickly, his voice steady despite the anxiety swirling inside him.
The woman nodded, stamping his passport with a red logo before handing it back to him. “Safe travels.”
Hoseok bowed to her, murmuring his thanks before following Sangho to a nearby seating area. They sat in silence, watching people pass by, the minutes stretching out like hours. Hoseok’s leg bounced nervously as he waited, his mind racing with thoughts of what might go wrong.
Finally, the announcer’s voice echoed through the terminal, calling for passengers on the flight to France. Hoseok’s heart leaped into his throat as he stood up, his legs shaky beneath him. Sangho rose as well, and Hoseok surprised himself by throwing his arms around the man in a sudden hug.
“Thank you,” Hoseok whispered, pulling away with a sad smile. “Thank you so much… and thank the doctor for me too.”
Sangho nodded, gently brushing a strand of hair out of Hoseok’s face. “Stay safe, lie low. The brothers aren’t stupid—they might not believe our trick forever. But it’ll buy you some time, and it’ll give us a chance to get away too. The doctor’s also leaving the country, so if they do figure it out, they won’t be able to find him.”
Hoseok nodded, the weight of the situation settling on his shoulders. “What about you, Sangho?”
Sangho’s smile was faint, but reassuring. “I have my ways. Don’t worry about me. Just go, Hoseok. Live your life.”
Hoseok smiled, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Thank you,” he whispered once more before turning and walking away.
Sangho watched him go, a sad smile on his face. “I hope they don’t find you,” he murmured under his breath.
Hoseok walked quickly, his heart pounding with every step. He moved fast, as if he could outrun the past that threatened to catch up with him. As he approached the gate, a flight attendant greeted him with a warm smile. He handed over his luggage, exchanged a few polite words, and then entered the plane, finding his seat near the window.
An elderly woman took the seat beside him, her eyes crinkling with warmth as she greeted him. Hoseok returned the smile, though it felt fragile, like it might shatter at any moment.
An announcement came over the intercom, instructing the passengers to buckle up. Hoseok obeyed, his hands trembling as he fumbled with the seatbelt. The countdown began, and Hoseok closed his eyes, his leg bobbing up and down nervously.
The plane started to move, first slowly, then picking up speed as it raced down the runway. Hoseok’s breath hitched as the plane lifted off the ground, climbing higher and higher into the sky. He opened his eyes, and a single tear slipped down his cheek as he gazed out the window at the clouds and the shrinking world below.
“We’re free,” he whispered, his hand resting protectively on his stomach. A small, hopeful smile tugged at his lips as he glanced down at his baby bump. “We’re finally free.”
