❝My own screams filled my head, yet the world around me seemed impossibly distant.❞
______________________________
As Marvolo guided me down the stairs, his grip firm around my hand to keep me close, I caught the first notes of the next song echoing through the club. I had no idea if he could dance, but that didn't matter. I was about to show him exactly how I moved.
The crowd parted slightly as we wove our way to the center of the room, where there was more space.
All day, I had been waiting—waiting for his touch, his teasing, for him to give in to whatever was simmering between us. But he had kept himself restrained, holding back just enough to drive me mad.
I waited for him to release my hand. The moment he did, I turned to face him, locking onto his dark, playful gaze.
The game had begun.
My hands slowly trailed over my arms, up to my shoulders, as my hips swayed in time with the music. My body followed the rhythm, my fingertips grazing along my collarbones before slipping into my hair. Marvolo's gaze never wavered, fixed on me with a quiet hunger. I saw the shift in his demeanor—the moment his amusement turned into something darker.
Good.
I was luring the devil back out.
I stepped closer, foot by foot, letting the music take control. As I moved around him, my fingers skimmed over his hands, his arms, his shoulders, then along the side of his neck before trailing down his back. He didn't move, but his head followed me, watching my every motion like a predator tracking its prey.
One last step, and I was in front of him again.
Slowly, I lifted my gaze, letting my lashes flutter as I met his eyes. An invitation. A challenge.
His left hand rose to the collar of my dress, fingertips ghosting over my neck with an agonizing lightness. His right hand moved to my arm—then, suddenly, he yanked me back against him, spinning me in one swift motion.
I collided with his chest, my back pressed against his body.
His breath was warm against my ear, laced with the lingering scent of cigarette smoke.
Goosebumps spread down my arms as his hands slid firmly to my hips, gripping them with an unspoken claim.
Then, his mouth hovered just over my skin, his voice a low, dark whisper.
"Playing too many little games might get you in trouble, princess."
And just like that, he fell into my rhythm, moving in perfect sync with me. Our bodies pressed together, grinding to the pulse of the music.
Heat surged through me as my heart pounded in time with the beat. But then—
I felt it.
Someone watching me.
Not Marvolo.
I glanced over my shoulder, my eyes skimming the crowded room. Everyone around us was lost in their own world, too preoccupied with their partners to pay us any attention. But when my gaze lifted to the balcony—
There he was.
A man dressed entirely in black, his face completely hidden beneath a full mask and hood. He didn't move. He just watched.
A chill ran through me, but I forced myself to turn back to Marvolo.
"Being with you has consequences," I murmured over my shoulder, tilting my head slightly so my lips almost brushed against his ear. "I broke my rules for you. You might want to enjoy it while it lasts."
