❝So much for his promise to 'gladly bleed for you,'❞

 ~Marvolo's POV~

I cracked my neck and fingers in several places as I waited for Angella and Ominis to return from the Scriptorium, the smoke from my cigarette thickening the air around me. If there was one thing I couldn't handle, it was this—losing control. I had tried everything to get inside the Scriptorium, but nothing worked. Father had placed powerful protective spells on both entrances.

The moment I woke up in the Undercroft—a place I knew far too well—I was in survival mode. I had to find Angella, no matter what. With my wand in hand, I scanned the halls and the passing students, calling to her through our shared mark. Why hadn't I taught her how to communicate through it? It would have made this search so much easier.

Every now and then, I caught faint whispers from her, but they weren't strong enough to pinpoint her location.

Then, I felt it—a sudden chill against my skin. Someone was using dark magic inside the castle. Following the trail, I found myself in the dungeons, stopping right outside the Scriptorium. I tugged on our bond again and this time, I heard a male voice call out a name.

"Arani."

"Ominis," I muttered under my breath.

That bastard had knocked me out—on Father's orders. I should have been furious with him, but my anger was swallowed by something deeper. The realization that my little brother had enough strength to do it. He was finally learning to stand his ground. Good for him.

I tried to communicate with Angella as often as possible, but dark magic kept interfering, blocking our connection at times. And that terrified me. I didn't know what messages were getting through or what she was hearing. So I kept repeating myself, hoping something would reach her.

Then, a small flickering flame appeared in my hand, carrying a note:

Come see me in the Undercroft once your brother and fiancé are finished in the Scriptorium.

P.S. She thinks it's you touching her right now. In case you're wondering what's happening in there...

Ominis wouldn't hurt her—not on purpose. She was his best friend, like a sister to him. They meant the world to each other. He wouldn't... right?

I yanked at our bond with force, desperately trying to break into the Scriptorium.

"Listen to me! It's not me in that room. I'm outside—I can't get in! Don't let him fool you!"

Dark magic pulsed again, shifting something inside. Ominis was being controlled by Father's curse.

Father had always treated Ominis like a puppet, pulling his strings at will. And the kind soul within Ominis kept letting him in.

I had learned to block Father's influence. He couldn't touch me.

"Stop acting like your brother," Angella's voice finally broke through.

Good girl. She was waking up from whatever trance she had been in.

Then, I heard it. "Ominis..." A moan. Not one of fear. Not one of pain.

My stomach turned.

I knew her well enough to recognize that sound.

My wand fired off every spell I knew—unlocking charms, counter-curses, even blasts to shatter the wall. Nothing worked. Every attempt rebounded.
