❝ His fingers brushed against mine, lingering for just a second longer than necessary❞
______________________________
After that horrible nightmare, I attempted to eat something in the Great Hall, though my appetite wasn't cooperating despite my need for nutrition. It was going to be a busy school day, and I needed energy—especially for my first Quidditch practice. Imelda Reyes had invited me; she was responsible for training new players before they could participate in actual games.
On my plate sat a heart-shaped egg with a slice of toast on the side. I pushed it away and glanced at the person sitting across from me—Anne, who was devouring her breakfast as if she hadn't eaten in weeks.
"Can you slow down for a second?" I sighed, giving her a concerned look. She stuffed another piece of toast into her mouth and grinned. "I can't! I have to hurry if I want to see Sebastian before his training!" Right. Sebastian Sallow—the Slytherin Quidditch team captain.
I had almost forgotten.
"I'm not sure if I should go to practice today..." I admitted nervously.
Anne slammed her fork and knife onto the table, staring at me as if I had just declared my own death. "Are you serious!? Come on, Ella, you've got this! Don't let idiots like my brother get in your way. You're incredible at flying—might as well use it to earn extra school points. Besides, you probably won't even have to talk to him!"
I glanced to my left, toward the other end of the Slytherin table, where that particular idiot sat with his friends—Ominis Gaunt, James Pinch-Smedley (Grace's brother), and Lewis Hughes. They were laughing and pointing at the fifth-year girls who had just entered the Great Hall. Disgusting pigs.
I couldn't understand why Ominis hung out with them. He was nothing like them. If I had to describe Ominis, I'd say he was kind and gentle. Maybe he stuck around out of fear—afraid of being bullied because of his blindness.
Anne tapped my hand reassuringly. "You'll be fine. Show them what you've got! I'll see you later, girl." I gave her a small smile and took a sip of my coffee, feeling the weight of the day pressing on me.
My eyes followed Anne as she sat beside her brother, grinning as she pointed at something on the table. She handed him a small brown parcel, and I instantly knew what it was—the golden snitch pin she had bought to wish him luck for his first game in years. Sebastian hugged her tightly before pinning it onto his black Slytherin robe. He smiled and took a bite of his toast, speaking to her between chews.
I glanced back at my plate, staring at the heart-shaped egg. Pressing my fork into it, I split it into two pieces and took a bite of my toast. I hated love. And everything that came with it.
When I stood up to leave, I kept my head down, avoiding the stares of others as if I were some sort of carnival attraction.
Then I felt it again—that burning sensation I had experienced in my nightmare. Lifting my head, my eyes met his. Sebastian's gaze lingered on me as I walked past. His expression was blank—cold, emotionless. Like I was a ghost.
I hurried toward the doors, escaping to the common room.

Sitting on the edge of my bed, I reached into my nightstand and pulled open the drawer. There it was—an unopened letter from Sebastian Sallow.
The parchment carried a faint scent of peppermint and something else I couldn't quite place. My name, Angella, was written in deep black ink. I had kept it hidden, too afraid to read it.
