❝ Did you really think the devil was capable of love? ❞
______________________________
Ominis and I were laughing, caught up in a conversation about our first lessons after the fall holidays, when we were interrupted by a sudden outburst.
Someone was shouting inside Mr. Gaunt's office.
By the deep, dark voice, I knew immediately—it was Marvolo.
Ominis grabbed my hand and guided me closer to the door, pulling me into the shadows so we could listen.
"Have faith in me, Father. I know what I have to do to arrange all of this."
"I know you're capable, son, but she doesn't seem trustworthy. How well do you even know her?"
"Well enough to bring her here in the first place. Trust me, she is loyal."
"She seems to have a better connection with your brother than with you. And then there's her history with that Sallow boy. How do you know he won't interfere with your deal?"
"I promise you, he won't. Sallow is the last person you need to worry about. I've handled it the way you taught me. And speaking of my little brother—he's too kind and gentle with her. This woman needs a dark, possessive man to guide her. I know her well enough for that."
"I'm just being careful, Arvo. I don't know this woman."
"Then give her a chance and get to know her before making any rash decisions. Like I said, Father, she is more than what she appears to be. You'll see it when I court her tonight at the gala. She is divine. She holds powers no one else possesses. She is the one. I'm sure of it."
I turned to Ominis, who wrinkled his brow in confusion.
He didn't know about the plan.
I had wanted to tell him, but I was afraid. Not of him—of what he would see in me. Not for who I was... but for who I had to become.
Ominis suddenly pulled his hand from mine, his face tightening in anger. Without another word, he stormed past the office, his footsteps heavy against the marble floor. As he reached the entrance hall, he knocked over a statue with a loud crash.
"Ominis!" his father barked.
But Ominis didn't stop. He kept walking, disappearing into the back of the house.
The door to the office swung open, and Marvolo stepped out, his eyes scanning the hall. But Ominis was already gone. His gaze landed on me instead. Without a word, he took my hand and led me inside, shutting the doors behind us.
I was offered a seat across from Mr. Gaunt, who was pouring himself a glass of firewhiskey. He took a slow sip, then lifted his eyes to mine.
Dark. Empty.
The same look I had seen in Marvolo before.
"Tell me, Miss Delgado," he said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Why are you here?"
I glanced at Marvolo, hoping for some kind of reassurance, but he only stared out the window, refusing to meet my gaze.
I cleared my throat. "I was invited by your wife, Mrs. Gaunt. Marvolo gave me an invitation to attend the gala tonight."
Mr. Gaunt leaned back in his chair. "I see. And why are you here now instead of arriving with the other guests?"
I hesitated. "Your son asked me to come with him... as his plus one."
