❝Then you're not leaving me a choice either❞
______________________________
Marvolo led us to the gates of the Gaunt estate, tucked near the edge of the dark forest, a place that seemed more like a summer retreat gone wrong. Ominis once told me they owned it, and I had always wondered what it looked like. The stories painted it as something beautiful, almost mythical.
As we stepped under a narrow stone archway, Ominis stood waiting by the door.
"Ominis? What are you doing here?" I asked, surprised.
A firm yet gentle hand pressed against the small of my back, it was Marvolo's. He didn't speak, but his touch made it clear, I was meant to follow.
Ominis held the door open for me, smiling silently like the gentleman he always was. The Gaunt brothers had a way about them, every gesture deliberate, almost ceremonial.
Crossing the threshold, I entered a dim, narrow hallway built of cold, black stone. It reeked of darkness and danger. The kind of place where, if you weren't careful, you didn't come out alive.
Instinctively, I turned to leave, but they shut the door behind me. Firm. Unmoving. Trapping me inside.
"I'm not going in there!" I shouted, backing away.
"Don't be scared," Marvolo said with a wicked grin. "We're with you."
Exactly what I was afraid of.
Alone, in the dark, with the Gaunt brothers. The atmosphere was oppressive, terrifying, yet oddly comforting.
"What if your father's in there?" I asked.
"He's not. Trust me," Ominis replied calmly.
"And why should I believe you?"
"Baby," Marvolo said gently, "my father fled the country. He disappeared after his attack on us in the Undercroft. He's long gone."
"Then tell me what's in there. This place doesn't match any of the stories Ominis told me. It's... creepy." A chill crawled down my spine.
They laughed uncannily alike, almost like twins. If I didn't know them so well, I might have believed it.
"Come on, darling, let's take a look," Ominis said, placing his hands on my shoulders. I guided him as we walked deeper into the hallway, Marvolo trailing close behind.
The torches flickered wildly, blinking from light to darkness. Dust coated every surface. Cobwebs draped from broken portraits. Torn wallpaper hung like dead skin from the walls.
What was this place?
The hallway seemed endless, every step sinking me deeper into dread. My heart pounded, anxiety crawling over me like a thousand invisible spiders.
Ominis suddenly removed his hands from my shoulders, I flinched. "Stop! What are you doing?"
"Merlin, Ella, stop being so dramatic," he snapped. "We're not going to kill you, if that's what you're thinking."
"I'm just grabbing my wand."
So we continued, but now I walked alone.
Then, faint whispers echoed from within the walls. Low, hurried voices, like a spell being chanted.
"Is someone in here?" I whispered to myself.
No answer.
I turned back to the brothers, only to find the hallway empty.
