❝But there was something—something dangerous—lurking beneath the surface.❞

We stood in line for ice cream, the warm summer air thick with the sweet scent of vanilla and sugar "So," Marvolo mused, hands tucked into his pockets. "What's your favorite flavor?"
I turned to face him. "Chocolate chip in a strawberry cone."
His brows furrowed slightly. "Chocolate with strawberries? That's a thing here?"
I smirked, stepping forward as the line moved. "You have to try some of mine."
"Hmm." He tilted his head, considering. "I usually go for sour flavors—like lemon or mandarin."
My face twisted in mock disgust. "That's gross. Ice cream is supposed to be sweet, not sour."
Marvolo laughed, shaking his head.
When it was our turn, I ordered for both of us, handing the cashier a five-euro bill. Marvolo studied the money with a puzzled expression as we walked to a nearby bench by the fountain. "You muggles and your weird-looking paper currency," he muttered.
I snorted, biting into my cone. "Muggles, huh?" He smirked, shrugging. "You know what I mean."
The square was buzzing with life. Parents sat around the fountain eating ice cream while children splashed in the smaller water streams. In the center stood a massive stone statue of a man on horseback, looming over the square like a guardian of the town.
I was enjoying the scene—until a few drops of my ice cream dripped onto my white pants.
"¡mierda! (Shit!)" I hissed, dabbing at the pink stain, but it had already soaked into the fabric.
Marvolo burst into laughter.
"You need a napkin?" he teased. "Like that child over there?" He nodded toward a toddler in a stroller, ice cream smeared all over his chubby cheeks.
My head snapped up. Without thinking, I smashed my cone into his face. Marvolo's entire nose was covered in white ice cream. I cackled, actual tears forming in my eyes.
He exhaled sharply, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "Laugh all you want," he grumbled, standing. "I'll be back for you once I clean this up."
He shot me a look—two fingers pointing from his eyes to mine—before heading back to the shop for napkins.
I was nearly finished with my ice cream when I noticed the playful glint in his eyes as he returned. That dark smirk on his lips.
Uh-oh.
Before I could react, he grabbed me "Marvolo, no—"
With zero hesitation, he lifted me over the fountain, holding me above the water "I need an apology," he said, voice low but amused. I wiggled in his grip. "Or what?"
"Or I drop you."
I laughed. "You wouldn't dare."
His grip loosened slightly. My stomach flipped.
