❝He looked very pale and very scared, afraid of losing us.❞

"She's right... She shouldn't be, but she is, unfortunately." Ominis let out a dry, bitter laugh at my defense of his actions.

Sebastian lunged forward, and I shoved against his shoulders with all the strength I could muster. "Please stop trying to hurt him, Sebastian!"

He sneered. "So I guess you haven't done it?"

"I—no—of course I didn't! He's my best friend. Yes, it was ruthless, thoughtless, and he hurt me in the process. But no, it's cruel to blame and punish him for something he never wanted to happen in the first place!"

"Just let me punch our best friend in his fucking face for crossing friendly boundaries!" Sebastian's voice trembled with rage as he lifted his fist, ready to strike.

"Let him do it, Ella," Ominis said, his voice heavy and unwavering.

Two firm hands gripped my shoulders, pushing me aside. I stumbled, falling to my knees. My white dress collected dust and dirt from the checkered floor, staining it with evidence of this night.

Ominis glanced at me before turning back to Sebastian. "He shouldn't be the only one punished for bad behavior in our group. I deserve this, and you know it."

Ominis was slightly taller than Sebastian, but he stood before him with unshaken confidence. Sebastian's eyes darkened to onyx, his fist clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. My heart pounded, bracing for the impact.

Across the room, Mr. Gaunt chuckled, his voice thick with malice. "Just punch the traitor already, you weak, pathetic fool."

Sebastian's body jerked violently, but instead of swinging at Ominis, he turned and stormed toward Mr. Gaunt, his fist flying. One punch. Then another. Then three more in rapid succession.

"Haven't you taken enough from me?!" he roared.

Blood sprayed from Mr. Gaunt's split lip, spattering across the stone floor. I swear I saw a few teeth go with it.

For a moment, Mr. Gaunt's eyes fluttered shut. When they reopened, something in them had changed. A cold, unfeeling emptiness. My stomach twisted with unease.

"You shouldn't have done that," he murmured.

Sebastian threw his head back and let out a hysterical laugh, then struck him again. "Threatening me, Gaunt? You think I fear fucking dying? You already took everything I had!" Another hit. "My parents, my dignity, my best friend's conscience, my future, my sister's safety—" He drove his fist into Mr. Gaunt's right jaw. "And you took my girl!"

Ominis reached out, his hand landing on Sebastian's shoulder in an attempt to ground him. But Sebastian turned in a flash, his fist swinging wildly, landing straight into Ominis's left eye.

Ominis staggered, his breath hitching.

"You deserved that one!" Sebastian spat. "How dare you choose Sweeting over your own best friend, you disgusting piece of shit. She should be the one to punish you!"

Sebastian backed away, shaking with fury, muttering to himself as he crossed the room. "I fucking hate the Gaunts. Should have stayed away when I had the chance..."

I slowly rose from the floor, my hands trembling. My voice was barely above a whisper as I spoke to Ominis. "There's a reason why I keep it all inside..."
