❝ She's had an awful week—I have to go get her❞

_____________________________

The weekend passed by incredibly fast, and soon everyone was gathered at the station, waiting to board the Hogwarts Express back to school. The autumn break had come to an end, and classes were set to resume on Monday afternoon.

After my chaotic fallout with Sebastian, I hadn't seen him in two days. Ominis hadn't heard from him, nor had Anne. It wasn't that I was worried, but an uneasy feeling had lingered in my chest ever since. I could only hope he was staying out of trouble.

This morning, over coffee, Marvolo and I had talked for a long while and finally decided to accept his deal. He wanted me to have my freedom, to go where I pleased, as long as he could do the same. And if we wanted to be together, we could be. No obligations—just time. We sealed the agreement with a lingering kiss before traveling to the train station.

He had ensured that his father would keep his distance until the time came for our engagement. It was a thoughtful gesture, truly, but the idea of him as my future father-in-law still filled me with unease.

After saying my goodbyes to Marvolo, I made my way to the sixth-year cabins, somewhere in the middle of the train. Since he was a seventh-year student, he would be seated at the front. We waved to each other before parting ways, and for some reason, it felt strange.

My suitcase had already been taken by the janitor, so I went straight to my assigned cabin. Before summer break, we had filled out a seating request form, and I had chosen to sit in cabin 1845.

When I slid open the door, Anne, Ominis, and Sebastian were already seated. The four of us had agreed to share a cabin, though now, with everything that had happened, I wasn't sure if that had been the best decision.

I took my seat by the window, directly across from Sebastian. He didn't even glance up to see who had entered, his focus buried in his book.

"Good morning," I said, directing my words toward Anne and Ominis.

They greeted me cheerfully and immediately launched into conversation about the latest gossip they had overheard.

I couldn't help but glance at Sebastian, hoping he would at least acknowledge my presence. But he didn't move, didn't even flick his eyes upward. Was he being stubborn as always, or was he truly trying to listen to my warning and keep his distance?

With a quiet sigh, I turned toward the window as the train began to move. Parents and family members waved from the platform, their figures growing smaller as we departed.

And then I saw him.

Among the crowd stood the man I feared most after last weekend. Mr. Gaunt.

Dressed in all black, he stood still, his lips curling into a grin as he raised a hand in a slow wave. A shiver crawled down my spine.

What if he wasn't just there to see Marvolo off? What if he was watching me?

Outside, the sky had darkened. Heavy rain continued to pour as the train wound its way through the highlands.

Anne had left to find Poppy in another cabin, eager to chat with her new best friend. Ominis and I sat side by side, trying to figure out a missing ingredient for a potion we had been assigned to study.

Sebastian remained in his seat, unmoving, still buried in his book.

A distant voice called through the train, growing louder as it approached.
