❝ And now here I am. Drunk and incredibly falling out of love.❞

I draped my black blazer over the bed, just as Ominis had suggested, and made my way down the hall toward the stairs.
As I passed the corner, I spotted Anne speaking quietly with Ominis. She caught my eye and waved before turning back to whisper something to him.
I didn't stop to ask what they were talking about. Instead, I slipped through the entrance hall and stepped outside, heading toward the gardens to find Sebastian.
Ominis had said he was out here, but as I wandered past the fountain, through the plaza, near the security posts, and into the orchard, I saw no sign of him. I checked the flower gardens, the pond, and even the gazebo-nothing.
Walking miles was one thing. Walking miles in heels? A different kind of torture.
Just as I was about to give up, I spotted him.
He stood by a rosebush, his back to me, staring at a large window in the distance. His hands rested on his hips, his posture tense.
I exhaled, out of breath from the search. "I finally found you."
Sebastian barely turned his head, glancing at me over his shoulder before facing the window again.
Not a word.
I frowned and stepped closer, tapping his shoulder. "Don't ignore me, Sallow. Ominis said you wanted to see me, so here I am."
"You're mistaken," he murmured. "I definitely don't want to see you right now."
I inhaled sharply, the strong scent of whiskey lingering around him. He had been drinking. He always did when something was bothering him.
"Then why did Ominis tell me you explicitly wanted to talk to me?" I asked, confused.
Sebastian sighed. "He misunderstood, apparently. I told him I didn't want to see you. Or speak to you."
"Alright," I said simply, turning to leave. If he wanted to drink himself into a self-pitying mess, that was his business.
But as I walked away, his voice rang out, sharp and angry.
"Why did you do it!?"
I stopped in my tracks and turned back. "Do what?"
"Open that fucking door this afternoon," he gritted through his teeth.
I stared at him, dumbfounded. "I didn't know you had an appointment with him. And I definitely didn't know you were behind that door."
He threw something to the ground-probably his cigarette, judging by the way the ember sparked against the cobblestone. "Well, you shouldn't have, Angelina."
I scoffed. "Is that a threat, Sebastian?"
He finally turned to face me. His arms crossed, his jaw clenched.
"It definitely wasn't a compliment."
His gaze flickered down my body, his expression shifting as he took in my outfit.
"Is that what you're wearing to the gala?" There was a bite of sarcasm in his tone.
I nodded. "It is."
He went silent.
His eyes lingered, trailing slowly from my heels up to the delicate corset, the intricate vines embroidered into the fabric, and finally, my curled hair framing my face.
