Alethea's POV:
The early morning sunlight filtered through the large windows of Professor Palladium's classroom, casting soft golden light across the desks. My eyelids felt heavier than usual, and no matter what everyone said about morning focus, I couldn't agree. The early hours made me feel dreamy, not alert.
Still, today's lesson had caught my attention. I straightened in my chair, stifling a yawn as I glanced around the room. Stella was casually painting her nails, the vibrant color reflecting in the sunlight. Beside her, Tecna was engrossed in her laptop, her fingers flying over the keyboard with practiced ease.
Professor Palladium, patient as always, stood at the front, gesturing to a large lock on his desk.
"We're going to open this lock using an Elventien incantation," he explained, his voice warm and inviting. "When using one of the nine ancient languages of Magix, pronunciation is key. This spell is pronounced Expandlo Hellion. The 'ect' sound at the start is crucial."
His gaze swept across the room, pausing briefly on each of us before landing on me. "Alethea, would you like to give it a try?"
I blinked, surprised he'd chosen me, but also excited. "I'd love to," I replied softly, rising from my seat. My heart beat faster as I walked to the front of the class, the anticipation in the room tangible.
"Expandlo Hellion," I chanted, focusing intently on the lock.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, with a soft click, the lock popped open. Relief and pride surged through me, and I smiled, feeling the warmth of the small success.
"Very good," Professor Palladium said with a proud smile as I returned to my seat. "Now, watch what happens when I change just one syllable."
The room fell quiet again, everyone's curiosity growing. Even Stella had paused her nail-painting. Professor Palladium repeated the spell, altering the pronunciation slightly.
In an instant, tiny kittens appeared out of thin air, swarming around the professor. He chuckled, gently playing with one using his wand. Laughter rippled through the classroom as more kittens climbed onto his desk, meowing and batting at the magical aura surrounding him.
Even Tecna looked up from her laptop, a soft smile tugging at her lips.
"The symbol that appeared is called a rural," Palladium continued, his voice barely audible over the soft meows.
I glanced over at Flora, who sat beside me, but noticed her gaze was distant. She was doodling absentmindedly in her notebook—something quite unusual for her, as she normally hung onto every word of Palladium's lessons. Aisha, sitting in front of me, also seemed to notice, glancing back with a knowing look.
