Chapter forty

"Whatever it is went through her blood stream."

They all were walking down the road, before they decided to pull off to the side and stop for the night, everyone began to find a place to sit, as Katniss stood back watching Carl sit down and feed his sister, and all she could think of was that shot she took to make sure she was on the ground instead of him, and when she remembered him, she remembered Gareth, as she quickly turned, walking away from him, Rick watched her go and find some place far away to sit down, not even near anyone else.

Where by night fall, Katniss was sitting there and as she did, footsteps could be heard, as she quickly grabbed her bow and turned to aim it at them "hey." Carl told her, and when he did, Katniss brought her bow down "hi." she told him, looking away, Carl sat down next to her "you didn't have to help me." he shared "you were in trouble." Katniss told him "so were you." Carol told her "you helped me once." Katniss told him, remembering how he shot the boy who was going to kill her "we're even now." she told him.

And when she did, it hurt Carl, where before when it was just his dad and Michonne, everything felt like a big game, but seeing her alive again, and even worse in that circumstance, it reminded him of how dangerous the world they lived in is, and he knew her saying they were even was just a way for her to push him away, but what she didn't know and what he wasn't about to tell her afraid that she'd scream in his face, was that he wasn't going anywhere, as the two sat there in silence.

Katniss heard leaves rustling, as she grabbed her bow and stood up, notching an arrow, Carl stood up, holding out his gun, Katniss took a step forward, looking into the woods, she didn't hear or see anything, which creeped her and Carl out even more, especially as footsteps could be heard coming toward's them from the left, the two turned aiming their weapons at Rick, who held his hands up in defense, as he looked at them both, they brought down their weapons.

Where the next morning, Katniss hadn't slept so she had gotten up to go out hunting and as she did, Daryl followed after her, where it seemed the two weren't hunting animals but looking for tracks from whoever or whatever they felt in the woods last night, where the rustling of the squirrels on the ground made Katniss so jumpy, she had shot an arrow into all of them before Daryl could even take a shot.

As the two were walking back to join the others, they walked around a tree, as everyone aimed their guns at them "we surrender." Daryl said, holding his hands up with all the squirrels, they all then brought down their guns, as Daryl began walking alongside Rick, Katniss walked side by side with Carl, Rick turned to them all and whistled "keep close." he told them, as Katniss and Carl continued to follow Daryl along with the others "help!" a man called out, as Katniss eyes went wide, she stopped walking along with Daryl and Carl "help! Anybody! Help!" the man called out again.

As Rick ran up to them, holding his hand up to let everyone else know to stop "dad, come on." Carl told him "Carl, I don't think.." Katniss told him, as the man screamed again "come on!" Carl voiced, as Rick turned looking at them all "come on." Carl said, as Rick looked back, they all began running off in the direction of the man screaming.

When they arrived, there was a man trapped on a rock by five walkers, as Carl shot one of them, Katniss shot an arrow into the one next to it, as Rick smashed the other one's head in, Carol stabbed the other while Daryl shot a bolt into the last one, him and Katniss then pulled their arrows out "we're clear. Keep watch." Rick told the others, as he then looked up at the man "come on down." he told him, as the man slid down from the rock, he looked at them all "you okay?" Rick asked, as the man threw up, they all looked away "sorry." the man said, as they looked back at him "yes. Thank you. I'm Gabriel." Gabriel told them.
