Sometimes, family matters were a complicated subject.

It wasn't that easy. Eric might be a troublemaker, but Lisa had to be lenient with him because of many reasons. The Manoban family might appear too restrictive and intimidating just because they were a powerhouse, but at the same time, no matter how ruthless they were, they extended their patience toward family members.

As someone from the underground and treating the organization as a family, Jane could understand this circumstance more than anyone. After all, one person betrayed her once. That person was also an underboss, having the same rank as Bear and receiving direct orders from the boss.

Many underbosses, including Bear, warned Jane about this particular person, but Jane didn't listen. It was not that she couldn't see the red signs, but because she was hopeful that the person would change his ways before it was too late.

"What?" Lisa raised his brows as his wife was quiet while staring at him, caressing his cheek with her thumb. "You've been looking at me like that as if you want to say something."

'I have a lot of things to say, my love, but I'd rather keep that to myself,' she answered inwardly while a smile turned up on her face. 'I learned my lesson the hard way back then, and I'm afraid because of this thing called family, you will be in danger. But then again, all I need to do is get rid of that guy if he gives me the slightest reason to. So, it's not really an issue.'

"Lisa," she called with a smile. "That girl... do you remember what she looks like?"

"Huh?"

"That girl," she stressed, watching him ponder for a moment before he nodded.

"You mean that first friend I had?"

"Yes."

"Well, I vaguely remember what she looks like. But I do remember how her pigtails bounce with her every step and how extravagant her dress was, as if she was a princess."

Her face brightened up. "Is she pretty?"

"..." Lisa studied the bright smile plastered on her face, but then he slid his eyes to the corner.

Was this a trap?

Would his answer cost him his marriage?

Why was she asking such a complicated question that might start an argument?

"Hmm?" Jennie cocked her head to the side, blinking innocently. "Why are you looking away? Don't tell me you don't want to answer?"

Lisa cleared his throat as he stared back at her. "She's pretty."

"Really?"

"Mhm." He nodded but then added just to avoid upsetting her. "But you're prettier."

The smile on her face instantly deadpanned, causing his brows to elevate. Did he say something wrong?

"Between me and that girl, who will you choose?" she blurted out, earning a raise of his brows.

Ever since Jennie and Lisa tried to work on their relationship, what Lisa knew about his wife was that she was not the jealous type. She trusted him enough, and he never gave her reason to be jealous. However, she was particularly bothered by this girl in his past. Therefore, Lisa didn't want to upset her.

But why did it seem like trying not to make her upset had the opposite effect?

No, why was she even asking such random questions? Questions he never thought he would hear from her because his wife wasn't the type.

"You, of course." Lisa still answered cautiously.

"Why, me??"

"Because you're my wife, the mother of my child, and I love you?"

Yet, her mood turned even sour. Seeing her worsening reaction, more question marks occupied his thought bubble, eyes swirling with complete puzzlement.

"Did I say something wrong?" he asked when he couldn't take the mystery anymore. "Why do you look upset? My love, you know you're the only woman in my heart. The only feeling I have for that girl is gratitude. Haven't I told you about it before?"

Her lips curved down until she was biting her bottom lip. "Do you think my face is better?"

"Well..." What a strange question, but he still answered what any person would say. "... yes."

"Let's say you met her as an adult and this face at the same time under different circumstances..." she said, pointing at her face as if she was on the brink of having a meltdown. "Who will you like?"

"..."

A moment of silence descended into them, setting in longer than it should have. They stared at each other with Jennie anticipating an answer while Lisa was in utter disbelief. She could ask him anything and he would answer even if they were the most confidential information about the company or even politics.

But this???

It was just a simple question... too simple, yet so complicated. weird, wasn't it?

"Forget it." Jennie shook her head gloomily, planting her hands on his shoulders as she tapped them mildly. "You don't have to answer. I know it's not important, and I'm not even ready to hear the answer."

Jennie pushed herself away from him listlessly. "You should wash up. I'll resign to bed first." She waved dismissively, dragging herself away from the balcony back to their room.

Meanwhile, Lisa stayed seated, hands spread, eyes on his wife's retreating back. Invisible dark clouds hovered over her head as dark shrouds surrounded her body.

'What did I say?' he asked himself, in utter disbelief at how the night took a sudden turn with just one question. 'Is she angry because... I told her she was prettier than that girl? Did she prefer if I told her that the girl was much prettier than her?'

Lisa tilted his head to the side, completely mystified at his wife's reaction to his answer. After some time, he shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. He pushed himself up from the chair, walking back inside the bed. Jennie was already on the bed, lying on her side, facing the opposite direction of his spot.

'She's really upset. She never slept with her back turned on my spot, after all,' he thought, letting out a deep exhale. He knew he didn't do anything wrong or say things without thinking, but somehow, he felt guilty.

Little did he know, Jennie was just as perplexed as him at why she felt so disheartened at his answer, even though she knew his remarks came with good intentions.
