"Let's part ways, Jennie Kim."
Jennie felt her heart sink as her breath hitched upon hearing that sentence. She wanted to deny it and tell herself her ears were playing tricks on her. But alas, the papers that she was staring at that had the words divorce papers on them hindered her from doing so.
"No," she whispered, prompting her elbows on the mattress to sit up. When she faced him squarely, she shook her head and repeated, "No."
"Why?"
"Why?" she repeated with a scoff, running her tongue across her inner cheek. "Do you really don't know, you jerk?"
Jennie bit her inner bottom lip, holding back the tears that were tempting to stream down her cheeks once again. Just when she thought she no longer had tears to shed, they were back to fill her eyes again.
"Lisa Manoban," she called under her breath, tearing the first page slowly. "You're not parting ways with me. You are stuck with me forever. Blame your fate that a plague got in your life."
Jennie tore the next page and then the other. Her action was calm, in contrast to the pain slicing through her heart.
"If you came here to divorce me, then I'm telling you, you already failed the moment that thought crossed you." Upon reaching half of the documents, she faced him again. "You will rest until you settle this matter? Then prepare yourself for countless sleepless nights because I will never agree. Never in this lifetime."
She held her breath to stop her traitorous tears from falling. "Get out, you heartless jerk." she clasped her hand, watching her stomach.
Lisa kept quiet as he glanced at her stomach. The second he did, Jennie quickly covered her stomach with the blanket as if she were protecting their child from him.
"Our marriage..." his eyes softened as his eyelids drooped. "... is already a failure from the start. It shouldn't even happen in the first place. We got married because of a child... are you telling me we should stick together because of a child again?"
"Stop..."
"Please..." Lisa slowly lifted his gaze to hold hers. "Let me out of this marriage. Free me from these cobwebs of lies."
"You!" Jennie choked on her own breath as her shoulders trembled. She bit her bottom lip, wondering if he knew how painful those words he spewed.
All this time, she held on to the hope he would get clarity and come to her to tell her they could work things out. It didn't necessarily mean they had to pretend nothing happened, but they could start with small steps. But alas, the reality was different. The solution he came up with was the complete opposite of what she hoped for.
How disappointing.
"Get out of here, Lisa Manoban." Jennie swept her hands to the side, letting the torn and whole papers fall from the bed. "Stay out of my sight for now, you heartless, stupid jerk. Even if you're that angry, how can you put my child under so much stress? Get out!"
She glared at him, teeth clenched. "Out, Lisa. Out."
"Hear me out --"
"No!" Her voice raised, only to wince at the line of pain in her stomach. Thus, she tried her best to calm herself down so as not to harm the baby. "I do not want to hear a sound from you. Not even a breath. Get out of my sight, Lisa. Listen to me while I'm asking nicely."
Jennie looked away, clasping her chest to keep her raging heart from escaping her chest. Her face crumpled as he bit her quivering lips, telling herself not to bawl her eyes again.
"Had I known things would be like this..." she hiccuped, unable to stop her tears from falling. "I would've just lied."
Her eyes shone angrily as she glared at him, grinding her teeth. "What? Are you disappointed now that I planned on tricking you, had I known you'd be like this? Well, surprise, you jerk. I am not Jane Cruel if deceiving you will even come close to my conscience."
"I can do so much worse..." she added through her gritted teeth. "I could've hurt you and steal your lifetime of work. It's not that hard for me, but..."
Jane couldn't continue her sentiments as the tension in her throat almost choked her. She wanted to say more; she wanted to throw a huge feat and scream as loud as she wanted. However, all she could do at the moment was shut her eyes while tears pooled beneath her eyelids.
"Was it... really that easy for you to end things with me?" Her voice shook as she mustered enough strength to break her prolonged silence. "I am not Jennie Kim, who cannot hurt a fly. I can kill or murder someone for no damn reason. But... for you, I wanted to change. I would be like her if you wanted me to and kill any traces of Jane if that would save this marriage."
"Lisa, loving you was not a lie. I made a mistake and should've told you beforehand, but can we really not fix it anymore?" Her voice quieted down as she looked at him with desperation. She could barely see him as her vision was blurred with tears, but it didn't matter.
"I can hold a candle for you for as long as you want. If you want space, then I'll give it to you until you no longer need it. I'll stay at home if that is what you want, dress up the way you want me to, and serve you all my life." Jennie puffed her cheek as she wiped her tears with her arm. "Just... just don't ask me to let you go because..."
Her tears would stop as she paused, catching up to her jagged breath. "I can't undo the past and unloved you. At the same time, I cannot say no for long. If we part ways, I'll never fall in love again." — and it would be a misery for a lifetime.
"Dummy..." he whispered, watching her bawl her eyes while making all those crazy confessions he didn't ask for. Lisa huffed heavily, rising from his chair to sit on the edge of the bed. Without a moment's hesitation, he took her into his embrace.
"Who said you're allowed to fall in love with somebody else? Did Lucas's habit rub off on you?" he muttered, clasping her shoulder mildly. "Jennie Kim... isn't the woman I love. She is my wife in papers, but the woman I want to marry is you, Jane."
