"Holy shit..." Mark cursed under his breath as he led Lisa and Lucas to where Jevin was at. The only enemies they encountered were dead, loitering in the hallway.
'This is insane,' he thought. 'It's like a massacre.'
Mark clenched his teeth and set his eyes ahead. Jennie went before them, and she truly stuck to her promise. She cleared the path.
'How...?'he wondered, shaking his head as he told himself this was not the time to entertain questions in his mind. What was important right now was that they catch up to her. After all, she just went off on her own, not giving them the chance to change her mind and make better plans.
But then again, with this level of skill, this might be the best plan they could come up with. Time was also their enemy, after all. And they had to admit Jennie was using every second worthy.
"Hah..." Mark raised his arm and checked his smartwatch. His face turned dark. "Go on without me!"
Mark leaped to the side to give way to Lisa and Lucas. Lisa continued his pace, reaching for Lucas's arm as the latter slowed down.
"Don't stop," said Lisa, not even giving Mark a look. "Enemies are following behind."
Mark raised his brows upon hearing Lisa's remarks, turning his head to his boss and the second young master.
'The wife is like a killing machine and the husband's observation skill is quite scary.' Mark stepped into the middle of the hallway, facing the direction they came from. "But then again, knowing our bosses can survive on their own takes some burden off of our shoulders."
Mark took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he reopened them, the corner of his mouth stretched into a smirk. Now that he had no one to protect but himself, he could go crazy.
"Good thing the young madam is skilled enough," he muttered, walking to a lifeless body nearby to pick up his rifle. "If not, they should've just stayed behind with Fig."
No matter where Jennie, Lisa, and Lucas go scream in danger. Deep in his heart, Mark knew that it was impossible to rescue Jevin with just them. Why? Because they all had to stay behind with Lisa. They were already surrounded before coming here, after all. The only option they had was to wait for the authorities, which hadn't come even until now, or take Lisa, Jennie, and Lucas with them to rescue Jevin.
Obviously, they chose the latter not because they weren't patient enough. They chose this because time wasn't in their favor. The little master was injured. Waiting might cost them his life.
"I already lost hope with the authorities long ago." As Mark picked up the rifle, which he clung across his body with a body strap, he dragged the lifeless body up in front of him. "Fortunately, we are hired in this gig."
Another glint flickered across Mark's eyes as he positioned his rifle in between the lifeless body's torso and arm. When the approaching footsteps grew distinct, he welcomed them with a round of fire.
*********
"Oy, oy, oy!" Joker panicked as he refocused his attention on Jennie's situation, only to see danger around her. "In the ceiling — hey!"
Jennie instinctively gazed up, only to see a broken ceiling and a person behind it. She jumped away from instinct, rolling on the floor to avoid the bullets following her trail.
"Behind!"
Without looking back, she slipped the rifle beside her torso and arm, aiming at the incoming enemy from behind her.
BANG BANG!
At the same time, she shot the person behind her, Jennie jumped to avoid the incoming bullets from the ceiling.
"Another one!"
Jennie slid to the side, crashing her side against the wall. "Shit!" she cursed through her gritted teeth, seeing that even the ceiling was occupied by enemies.
BANG BANG BANG!
"Did they think doing that would make it hard for us?" she wondered, shooting the other person inside the ceiling. 'It only made it easier to kill you.'
BANG BANG BANG!
Jennie flinched when she heard another round of shots in the area. However, this time, it wasn't aimed at her. When she turned her head, she caught Lisa and Lucas at the other end of the hallway.
"Hah..." she breathed out in relief, keeping her eyes on the pair of burning eyes looking back at her. "Goodness. Why am I scared now?"
THUD!
Jennie snapped her eyes when the person in the ceiling, whom Lisa shot dead, fell from the broken ceiling. The body landed between her and Lisa, causing dust to ascend from underneath his body.
"Jennie Kim!" Lisa's voice thundered, snapping Jennie back to the current lapse. He stormed in her direction, eyes burning in anger at her fearlessness and stubbornness.
"Uhh... wait!" Lucas gazed up, only to see a glint from the darkness.
BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!
Lucas jumped when a long round of bullets fired from his brother and sister-in-law. Yet, his feet followed Lisa as he was afraid of getting left behind. When they reached Jennie, the latter had already got up from the floor.
"Where's Mark?" was the first thing she asked, only to flinch when Lisa grabbed her arm.
"I don't care what you can or cannot do. Don't run off like that, Jennie Kim," he growled under his breath, gripping her arm even tighter. "If you're going to risk your life, risk it with me. I'm not a child who needs to hide from a woman's skirt."
Jennie frowned, swinging her arm, but he didn't budge. "Lisa —"
"I don't like this, new management." His stress on what he called her made her freeze, looking up at him with slight surprise. "Don't run off like that. Jevy is also my child... including that one in your womb. I am insulted."
"It's better to insult you this way than lose you."
"You will lose me either way." He hissed, raising his other hand, and pulled a trigger to shoot another person that just come out of the room near the hallway. "Trust me if you want me to trust you. I think I've proven myself enough. Am I that incapable and unreliable in your eyes that you think I'll just burden you?"
