[PRESENT TIME]
Three months after Miracle was born, Jennie did nothing but take care of her newborn. Despite the insecurity and depressive thoughts that would cross her mind from time to time, Jennie got strong support from her husband. Therefore, when her doctor told her she could do a mild workout and proper diet, she started doing so to regain her confidence.
Those intrusive thoughts would still cross her, but she wouldn't entertain them that much. Why would she? Whenever Lisa looked at her, it never made her feel less. His perverted nature, matched with his pair of affectionate eyes, gave her the encouragement she needed at the time she needed it the most. Lucas and Jevin cheered on her, so that was also a bonus.
Overall, Jennie wanted to do it, not just to regain her confidence. But she wanted to be in good shape as soon as possible to support her husband and family from any threats. She couldn't protect them if her sanity thin every passing day, right?
"Hah..." Jennie huffed.
Sweats covered her skin, making it appear shiny. Standing in front of the mirror that expanded across the entire wall, she raised her arms on either side of her. She smirked, seeing the little muscles in her shoulder, nodding in satisfaction. Her tummy still needed a girdle, but it was smaller than when she gave birth.
She felt more confident now, though.
"You look happy."
Jennie snapped her eyes as her brows rose upon hearing a familiar voice. She twisted her upper body to look back, smiling in satisfaction upon locking eyes with Bear.
"Of course," she said confidently, looking back at the mirror once again. "I'm not vain, so don't misunderstand."
'Not vain?' Bear arched a brow, recalling how she used to brag about her beauty whilst being confident. Perfect was the word she often used in the past.
"I just want to be confident in my own skin... even though this skin wasn't originally mine," she added, making Bear blink back at her.
Bear kept his thoughts to himself, marching inside the residence's indoor gym. He picked up the small towel on the bench in the corner, tossing it to her, which she caught on instinct.
"Is it really okay for you to work out this soon?" he asked as he sat down on the bench while Jennie wiped her neck. "You just gave birth, and there's no need to rush. After all, Mark and Princess were now reporting directly to your husband. Tiger is also with him at all times. There's no need for you to worry. Everything is under control."
"I know that, Bear. But we learned our lessons months ago." Jennie smacked her lips, trudging to the bench, and then sat down beside him. As she picked up the water jug on the floor near the seat, she added, "I can't be complacent. Two heads are better than one. I trust Lisa, but when you're in the middle of everything, it's hard to see other angles. So, it's best if I stay on the lookout."
"Fair enough."
"Moreover, since everything is now in motion, I need to be capable of protecting my children." Jennie faced Bear after chugging down a mouthful of water. "Jevy doesn't say it, but there is still time he recalls his time in that room, Bear. We saved our son, yes, but they left something even I cannot erase no matter how much we beg in our prayers. What happened is something he will carry forever and just that alone is enough for me to want to wipe all of them out."
Bear held her gaze, rocking his head. "I see. I thought he was fine."
"Jevy is fine most of the time." Jennie leaned back and stretched her leg, holding the water jug with both her hands. "But sometimes, whenever I stay with him longer in the night, he talks in his sleep."
Her face softened as a tinge of sadness shone in her eyes. Recalling that time her son was talking in his sleep, the stabbing pain in her heart resurfaced. Jevin was breaking out in sweats, calling out to his parents for help. She could still remember staying with him longer while Lisa looked after Miracle in their room.
The guilt Jennie and Lisa felt at that time urged them to do better.
"I can't erase that memory from my son, but at least I can prevent that incident from happening again." She forced a smile as she cast Bear a look. "So? Any news about Eric?"
"Nothing much, but he's been spending time with your husband."
"I see."
"Also, I think Lisa finally got a hold of Wolf."
"Huh?"
The corner of Bear's lips curled up into a smile and nodded. "After months of trying, your husband finally set a date for meeting him."
"That's good." Relief immediately covered the sadness in her eyes upon hearing the news. "That grumpy old man surely gave him a hard time."
"He's someone who will not take favors, even from his former comrades."
"Did you ask for his help?"
"If I did, he wouldn't give Lisa a chance." Bear let out a sigh, peeling his gaze from her. "You know him. He takes your words very sincerely and acts as if he is the most righteous person in the world."
Jennie chuckled at the thought of a former colleague. Her men had differences in views and beliefs, and thus, not most of them got along well. Sometimes, they would do things just to spite each other. Even so, they all listened to her.
Wolf, for instance, was an arrogant man who disliked Bear with passion. Therefore, if Bear asked him anything, he would do the complete opposite. The man had the same treatment to Tiger and Princess. In other words, Wolf, who was currently the President of a foreign country, had every reason not to meet Lisa.
All the people he loathed worked for Lisa, after all.
"My husband is surely amazing, isn't he?" Jennie turned her head to Bear, grinning. "I wonder how he did it?"
"No idea."
"Well, I guess it doesn't matter." She looked away, but the smile on her face was cemented. She slapped her thigh and then stood up, gazing down at him. "Let's go. My daughter needs to eat. Fill me in the details of Joker and the rest."
