"Why did you do that, Mr. Captain? Last night, I heard what you did to Eric last night. Even if I used all my brain cells, I just cannot see the logic in why would you do that for me. Please give me an answer or I might lose my mind."
Irene tried her best to wait before speaking her mind. However, she had been waiting and thus, she didn't beat around the bush. Answers were what she needed.
Tiger chewed the food slowly and then swallowed it down his throat. "Who said I did it for you?"
"Huh?"
"Miss Bae, believe me or not, but most of my actions don't have a deep explanation." Tiger reached for the glass of water, chugging a mouthful to clear his throat. When he cleared his mouth, he faced her again with a nonchalant look on his face.
"I did that to that guy because he's annoying as fuck. That face of his confuses the fuck out of me," he explained in the same nonchalant tone. "I've always wanted to punch the guy in the face, you know? And last night, I got the opportunity to have a reason to do that. So, there's that."
Irene furrowed her brows as she glanced down, asking herself if she should believe him. When she lifted her eyes to him again, Tiger was already picking up a piece of meat.
"That's your reason?" she inquired quietly. "It's not because of me?"
"Why would I do that for you?" he returned. "I'm not a hero, Miss Bae. And I don't plan to be one. If there's something I aspire to be, that would be becoming a supervillain. I'm good at it. Mr. Kim can vouch for that."
"Are you sure?"
"No."
"So, you're lying?"
"Haha." The corner of his mouth stretched, moving his face closer to look at her face properly. "I was kidding. You're so serious, Miss Bae. It makes me want to mess with you."
Tiger chuckled as he shook his head while Irene frowned.
"Can you please be a little serious? Did you do it for me, or did you not?"
"I did it for myself." He stressed with a mouth full of meat. "Are you happy now? Won't you go insane now that question is answered?"
"Are you... sure?"
Tiger rolled his eyes in annoyance, pointing the fork in her direction. "Be grateful you're a woman. I would've messed with you more."
"Why is my gender so important?" she mumbled, but he just shook his head. "I'm just trying to make sure because I don't want to owe anyone something. I hate it."
"Hate what?" he asked with disinterest.
Irene took a moment to answer. "I hate it when I feel like I am responsible for another person's life." Her eyes moved down, recalling that time she felt responsible for someone, only for her to almost lose her life and everything.
It was the reason she felt like going insane when she heard what Tiger did. Even if the man did it for her, it wouldn't make her happy. If anything, she planned on doing everything even if it meant giving Tiger a fortune just to call it even.
She just didn't want to owe anyone anymore. It took her years to build up the peace she now had, and she wouldn't allow a stranger to disrupt the peace she worked hard for. Not today, not in the future.
"Ahh..." Tiger didn't show interest in her remarks, continuing to eat the food while it was still warm. They wouldn't be good if they turned cold. But contrary to what he appeared, when he swallowed down the food, he looked back at her to say something.
"Don't worry. You owe me nothing, Miss Bae." He smiled. "I can handle myself. So, no pressure."
Her brows rose, blinking. "You should. You're a grown man, so you should handle yourself."
"Exactly. So, I don't understand the fuss." Tiger chuckled playfully. "Anyway, is that all you want to ask?"
"Well." Irene pondered before she nodded. "I guess that's all I want to know."
"Okay."
She pressed her lips, watching him eat. "Can you finish all of that?"
"Mhm. I haven't had anything for the day and those rude bastards didn't give me food." Tiger cocked his head back, hissing with his open mouth. "Those bastards. Once my probation is over, I'm going to give all of them a hard time."
"The captain role is not a license to bully your subordinates, you know?"
"They asked for it."
"What kind of logic is that?" she murmured, frowning. "Anyway, were you scolded badly because of what happened?"
"Uh, yeah. They tortured me."
"Torture? How?"
"By reading a hundred long pages of my employment contract." His face turned sour at the memory. "And then they made me read the rules of the security unit from cover to cover. They even made me write a thousand-word apology — fuck them. They're all dead to me!"
'How could he say that so easily?' Her frown deepened, thinking his punishments weren't even as severe as she thought. Yet, he was still complaining. "Are you that ungrateful? Shouldn't you be happy that they didn't fire you out?"
"Miss Bae, the world should thank me if I end up killing a scum like Eric Manoban," was Tiger's defense. "I'm doing a favor to the world if he's dead!"
"Shh!" She placed a finger in front of her lips, shushing him. "People might think you're some sort of rogue. You shouldn't say things like that so easily. People might misunderstand."
"Huh?" Tiger looked at her, baffled.
"Goodness." Irene sighed, looking at him with slight dismay.
Tiger blinked, looking at her longer than he should have. The longer he stared, the more her brows rose in bafflement.
"What?" she asked, feeling a little conscious, as this was the first time he stared at her this long. "Is there something on my face?"
"Miss Bae." Tiger pointed at himself. "Looking at this face, what do you see?"
"What?" her brows furrowed, but she still answered. "A human being."
"A human being, huh?" Tiger cupped his face, humming a long tune as if there was something more to think about her answer.
"What are you thinking?"
He glanced at her and said, "I'm just thinking you have eye problems."
"Eye problems? Why? Aren't you human?"
"Not that." Tiger clicked his tongue as he pushed himself away from the table. "Never mind that. Anyway, do you have plans later?"
"Why are you asking that?"
His lips stretched from ear to ear until his eyes were squinting. "I'm suspended, and I'm not going home knowing my friends are waiting for me to shit on me. Let's go target shooting?"
"Uh..." Irene massaged her nape, thinking about it. "Well, I canceled my appointment today so —"
"Then, that settles it! Let me finish this one, then let's go."
"..."
Did she just agree on a date?
