Jennie was right. Lucas and Mrs. Deng nearly had an accident with the way they walked down the stairs. Thankfully, Bear was there to avoid any of that from happening.
"Hah!" Lucas huffed, standing beside the couch where Jennie sat. "What a disgusting — sis, do you have alcohol? This piece of trash had to make me drag her all the way here."
Jennie let out a chuckle as she fished out a small hand sanitizer from her bag. "Here," she said, tossing it to Lucas, which the latter caught in the air.
After nearly falling down the stairs, Bear offered help. Lucas didn't refute, simply replying with a huff before tossing Mrs. Deng to him. Lucas immediately went to Jennie's side, waiting for Bear to drag that woman to Jennie.
Thud.
Bear dusted his hand off as he pushed Mrs. Deng in front of Jennie, but the latter subsequently fell on her knees at the sight of Jennie.
"Young madam..." Mrs. Deng's face already paled from all the screaming and sweating. Looking at Jennie, the little hope in her heart resurfaced in an instant.
"Young Madam, please forgive me!" Mrs. Deng tried, kowtowing in front of the young madam. She might have failed to persuade Lucas, but Jennie might sympathize with her. Even though she didn't have a close relationship with the young madam like Dara, Mrs. Deng believed Jennie had a big heart to spare.
Mrs. Deng didn't need Jennie's entire heart, but just a portion of it. If Jennie forgave her, then Lucas wouldn't do anything to her anymore.
"I didn't mean to wear your clothes! I just thought you weren't using them and it's a waste, but I now realize how wrong I was!" she begged Jennie, her forehead already touching the marble floor. "Please give me a chance to correct this behavior! I promise you this will not happen again!"
"Tch." Lucas clicked his tongue, disgusted at this shamelessness Mrs. Deng was displaying. "This woman... how dare you still ask for forgiveness when I already told you to leave this house, huh? Do you think my sister will forgive you for what you've done?"
"Please, young madam! Have mercy on me! I already know my fault. Please forgive me! I will pay for the dress even if it means using my life savings!" Mrs. Deng ignored Lucas as she continuously begged for Jennie's mercy. "I will not do it again and I will reflect on my attitude! Please... give me a chance. I will not tell a single soul about what the second young master had said and done. Just don't kick me out, please! I've served this family for decades and serving you is already my life!"
Mrs. Deng went on and on and her voice raised every sentence. Meanwhile, Lucas's eyes glinted, having this strong urge for a round two and this time, drag her outside of this house. However, before Lucas could say anything, Jennie reached for his hand and held it.
Lucas turned his head to the owner of the hand holding his, calming down after seeing that plain look on his sister-in-law's face.
"Hmph!" he huffed, keeping his lips shut while Jennie retrieved her hand from him.
"Mrs. Deng, you don't have to kowtow like that." Her voice was calm and soothing, giving the impression Mrs. Deng succeeded.
'Heh...' Mrs. Deng mentally smirked, about to lift her head when a foot landed on the back of her head.
"Others might think the Manoban family is mistreating their people." Compared to her soothing voice, Jennie's face bore nothing but coldness, stilling Mrs. Deng's head on the floor with her foot. "I'm not mad at the fact you're wearing my clothes. They were just clothes, and you have a point. It's a shame that they were just being archived here. Your nasty attitude and your deliberate reoccurring disrespect toward me don't anger me as well. You're too pathetic, after all."
"However, how dare you disregard my dearest little brother's orders?" she added, adding pressure on her foot, but not too much as she had to think of the child in her womb. "Do you truly see his words so lightly? How dare you? You said you've worked in the family for decades, and yet, it seemed you are unaware of how valuable Lucas's opinion is in the family."
Lucas cast Jennie a side-eye, a little appeased by his sister's remarks.
"That display of disrespect might upset me, but not enough to get my undivided attention." Jennie lifted her foot from Mrs. Deng's head, resting her leg over the other. "Raise your head, Mrs. Deng, and please, stop begging. You and I know you don't mean every lie you spewed just now."
Mrs. Deng froze, wide-eyed.
"Don't make me straighten your back," Bear chimed in, standing a few steps from Mrs. Deng's side. "It might end up a temporary injury. "
Mrs. Deng gulped, mustering every bit of energy and courage to follow the instructions. Slowly, she pushed herself to sit up. She stayed kneeling, lifting her shaky eyes to Jennie. Much to her dismay, the look on Jennie's face was something she had never seen in the past.
The memory Mrs. Deng had for Jennie was that same gloomy young madam in the past. Even though the latter changed a little before they moved to the penthouse, Jennie never made her feel this sense of dread creeping up her spine. Hence, the surprise of how Jennie looked at her as if she was someone who could end her life if she so pleased.
Mrs. Deng swallowed, telling her heart to be still.
"So?" The corner of Jennie's mouth hooked up into a devious smirk. "Do you know what truly angers me, Mary Rose?"
"Yo — young madam..." Mrs. Deng's breath hitched once again, clearing her throat to stop her stuttering. "I didn't..."
She trailed off, pressing her lips into a thin line as Jennie arched a brow.
"Hah..." Lucas scoffed once again, clicking his tongue irritably. "Mary Rose, why... did you betray grandma?"
"Huh?" Mrs. Deng looked up at Lucas, confused. "Second young master, what are you..."
"What did Eric offer you, Mrs. Deng?" This time, Jennie spoke, putting it plain and simple. "You don't have to deny everything unless... You don't want help."
Mrs. Deng's mouth fell, moving her gaze back to Jennie. This time, her complexion turned even more pale as her heart sank. At this point, Mrs. Deng immediately knew she was doomed from all directions. Lucas didn't need to drag her out, but once Eric, Lisa, or Grandma Manoban heard of this, she would disappear from this world.
And Jennie knew that very well.
Jennie cocked her head to the side, fluttering her eyelashes ever so tenderly. "You can still save yourself, Mrs. Deng." she dawdled, casting the maid a knowing look.
"Don't miss this chance... You know this might be the last."
