We spent all morning arguing against each other. We could hear the gunshots coming closer and closer but we weren't worried about that. We were only worried about our current situation: we didn't have a lot a food left and almost no water.
To be honest arguing was a perfect way to postpone our trip outside the high school and I did a lot to be sure it will last forever. However I finally had to do something to end it and I took the dumbest decision ever. I took a knife and without saying anything else I went to the door.
She tried to stop me of course but I had the knife and was really angry so she was a little bit worried about that - she was scared of me and that felt good. She couldn't stop me and I opened the door of the main entrance. Little did I know that there was someone behind it !
A little boy made its way into the building and hid behind me. I was so startled I screamed. I was so puzzled. I tried to close back the door but the kid told me to wait for his friend. I looked at Anna to see what she was thinking about but she was looking at the kid as if he was some kind of a ghost. I decided to close the door.
"But Mary and Georges are gonna get killed if you close the door !!" cried the kid.
What was I supposed to do? I closed the door but didn't locked them and looked back at the child. I asked him its name. Michael. He was eight. I then asked him who were Mary and Georges but he didn't answered. He just fled into the stairs. I think he got scared of Anna and I. After all he didn't knew us.
Anna was still petrified. She looked at me confusedly and opened her mouth to speak but the door opened again and we heard gunshots. A man entered the building running and before I could move he just ran toward me. We both collapsed. Anna finally realized she had to move and she went to the door. There were some guys outside pointing their guns at us and we were lucky she had time to shut and lock the door before they could come closer.
However they decided to fire their guns and bullets started to came through the door. We both run into the stairs, followed by the man who also had a gun. As Anna was closing the door of the first floor behind me - and in front of the stranger, Michael reappeared and told us to let Georges come with us. With a look at me, Anna decided to let him in.
We ran until we reached the seventh floor, closing and locking as many doors as we could. We could hear the Robbers in the building. They probably had destroyed the door of the main entrance which wasn't bulletproof of course.
We decided we had some time so we stopped in the lab. Anna was already packing our stuff. I asked Georges who he was, threatening him with a knife.
It turns out he was a French guy who went in the United States for work - computer stuff. So far, I learnt he isn't related to Michael but we didn't have a lot of time to get to know each other - even now that I'm writing those lines.
Georges told us Mary and him had this plan to leave the city which was too dangerous for the kid using one of the yellow high school bus. However as they were making their way to school they get trapped by some Robbers who tried to steal them their bags. As it was their only supplies, they refused. Mary told Michael to flee as fast as he could and Georges took out his gun.
This is the moment Michael asked where was Mary. This is the moment Georges burst into tears. This is the moment Anna and I understood Mary was killed by the Robbers. Even though I didn't knew her, I felt - and still feel - sick to know that. Was she killed because she didn't want to give what was her to protect a child? It wasn't even her damn son !
Michael finally understood what was happening and started to cry again. We heard another gunshot - probably in the second or the third floor because it sounded closer. I helped Anna packed our thing even if I was still asking myself what we were going to do.
She took the lead and went through another pair of stairs, hushing us. We followed her and started to go down the stairs afraid we could run into the Robbers. It took approximately ten minutes to leave the building - but in my mind it lasted forever. I could still hear the sobbing of Michael behind me.
We finally got outside the building and to my surprise I saw Anna running into a local I didn't even know was there. She tried to open the door but it was closed. She then tried to force to open the door with her shoulders and I decided to help her. Georges told us to move out of the way and fired into the lock with his gun. The door opened. Anna went inside as I was yelling at Georges that he was crazy.
She came back to us with a key ring and ran into one of the three bus that were parked here. We heard another gunshot. One of the robbers was shooting at us through a window of the fourth floor ! He was yelling that they would get us and that gave us the motivation to run faster than ever.
Of course Anna didn't choose the right bus at first and the key was useless so we had to go to another one. We finally got into the second bus and it was the right one. Once we were all inside she drove us out of there.
We didn't talk that much since we left the city. Michael and Georges were crying at the back of the bus and I sat in the front row - behind the driver's seat. It is kinda my fault that we had to run out of our shelter and I feel sorry for Anna who didn't want to move forward. I asked her where she was driving us and she only said she didn't know yet.
She drove for two hours and then finally stopped while we were making our way through a forest. She decided it was best if we spent the night here. We ate some of our food and Georges gave us some of their water. Even if they almost didn't speak for the whole evening it feels good to know that they're now four of us against all those Robber and people willing to do anything to survive.
Georges and Michael felt asleep and I suggested Anna should sleep first since she drove a lot. I took the first watch of the night and she'll do the second. I'm not sure Georges realized yet this was necessary.
I have no idea what we will do tomorrow and I start to be scared again. Will we ever have a normal life again?
