Shawn's POV:

"It's been 3 weeks, she graduates in 2. I've been respecting her wishes of giving her the space she wanted, but it seems like she's been getting a bit more comfortable with me?... I can't explain it. It might seem this way because I'm a man, and just take things out of proportion. I don't know but she winked at me last night after we celebrated our friend Coiya who graduated early. And guess what, she's 8 months pregnant." I wince imagining the face Deon made when he saw her. No one knew, and damn, did it hurt and make things awkward at first. "Poor Deon."

"But back on topic, things have actually been great against the not-so-silent treatment. Chris, her ex-boyfriend has showed up a couple of times trying to win back her favor, but she's gaining back that confidence he was sucking from her...Need a tissue?... Here you go... As I was saying, I really think I have a chance at winning her back. I'd be a fool to not try to." A smile rains over my face in what could be a possible future.

"Oh yeah, just wanted to let you know that I'll be in North Texas in a couple of weeks. Monica and Meg's grad party will be there. You know, those areas that borders Oklahoma so businesses took the idea of building buildings and making them half half of the two states. It's sort of like that one convention we went to years ago, with the building split into half vertically so on one side there was a casino and the other was line dancing. I wonder if you even remember that. I did, it was the first time dad hit me in public. I was so embarrassed..." I chuckle bitterly at the memory. "...and like always you told him to stop, but kept fucking smiling." I look at the wench before me now in her tiny nursing home bed, shaking and mumbling apologies like she frequently did.

"I'm glad to know most of your teeth got knocked out your mouth... Oh, don't look at me like that... You couldn't even pretend like you were relieved he put his hands on me instead of you. You feared him. Afterall, I showed mercy by allowing you to be able to live your days hidden from the brutal man. You had the brains, but you could never beat him."

Like every visit, my mother's tears fall down her eyes. Not sure what for but she cries every time without fail. She sits in this room every day, having to wait to get her diaper changed since her legs are still very weak. Who knows, she might not be able to walk again. Not my problem.

"What's wrong? Horrid flashbacks? Guilt? Why are you crying?"

She wipes the tears, then take the piece of paper and pen I gave her to write to me. If I'm going to be in here making conversation, I could at least give her some way to communicate. Technically, it's good for her to have this so she can work her hands more and gain strength back in them.

"You regret everything, and you're sorry?" I scoff a fake laugh. "Of course, you would now. I mean I'm your caretaker, and I can do whatever I want with you. I can put you on the streets, send you to a shelter, or drug you up and let you become a dope fein. Be careful how you treat your kids, and parents tend to forget that one day those children you abused will be your caretaker, and that could be their moment of revenge. You're lucky, I'm nice about it."

Her hands scribble on the paper again, for a short time this time.

Thank you.

"Oh, mother, you have no choice but to be grateful. Funny how life works, you hated your mother because she wanted nothing to do with you, then turned around and did the same thing to me. Now grandma is your next door neighbor, just so you can see how wrong you went in life. A reminder that you became the very same person you hated." Well, she's her neighbor now because we don't want father dearest trying to look for close relatives.

It seems like when I'm here with her, I get to let out everything she did that hurt me. My mother left me behind, she starved me, left me in the care of someone else and took me from her, then all of a sudden wants to be a part of my life for my senior year of high school. What a joke.
